Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Warriors Go 1-1 With Top 5 Upset at Hoops in Hawaii Holiday Classic

Honolulu, Hawaii – The Indiana Tech women's basketball team took to the skies to compete in the Hoops in Hawaii Holiday Classic over the weekend, matching up with two top 20 ranked teams in the NAIA. On Sunday, tech faced No. 16 University of Providence, where they fell 61-54 before a bounce-back win over No. 5 ranked Carroll College 62-59. The Warriors move to 9-2 on the season and stay at 6-0 in conference play.

Against the University of Providence (Mont.), the Warriors started strong, taking a 5-point lead after the opening two minutes. Tech struggled to find the basket over the next few minutes, which gave the Argonauts an opening to take the lead, doing so with 5:44 remaining in the first quarter. The Warriors kept things close, only allowing Providence to take a 4-point lead, and an Erika Foy jumper knotted the game at 13 with 1:14 in the quarter, but a last-second three put the Argos up by 3 going into the second quarter. Opening the second quarter, Providence extended their lead to 8 points, but the Warriors fought as a team and closed the gap as they went into the locker room, having tied the game at 29. The third quarter favored the Warriors. Led by Amaris Lowery, who hit 3 threes on as many attempts, outscored the Argonauts 17-12 to take a 5-point lead into the final quarter. Providence hit a pair of threes in the opening minute of the fourth quarter to retake the lead. Tech kept the game close going into the final three minutes but came up short down the stretch as Providence put the game out of reach.

Against Carroll, the Warriors got off to a slow start as they were outscored 22-8 in the opening ten minutes, but the resilience of the Warriors showed as they flipped the script on the Fighting Saints, outscoring them 22-10 in the second quarter, trailing 32-30 going into the halftime break. Tech kept the momentum from the second quarter going out of the break as they kept the Fighting Saints' offense in check, allowing only 12 points while scoring 17 of their own to establish a 3-point lead heading into the last quarter. Nothing could separate the two teams in the final quarter as they matched each other shot for shot, and the Warriors maintained the lead they had established in the third quarter to win 62-59.

Tech was led by Taylor Covington with 19 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. Erika Foy added 16 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 assist, while Korryn Smith posted 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 1 assist.

The Warriors are back in action on Saturday, December 30, as they keep their run of Top 25 matchups going, hosting the No. 2 ranked Indiana Wesleyan Wildcats in the Schaefer Center. The game against the Wildcats is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
