FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women's basketball team hosted the No. 2 ranked Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcats in the Schaefer Center on Saturday afternoon for their final game of the calendar year. The Wildcats showed why they are ranked No. 2 in the nation as they took down the Orange and Black in 64-38 fashion. The Warriors move to 9-3 on the season and 6-0 in conference play.
The game started slowly through the opening five minutes of the first quarter, with the score tied 4-4, before the Wildcats offense began to click. Down the stretch of the first quarter, the Wildcats offense went on a 12-3 run, leading 16-7 going into the second quarter. IWU kept the momentum in the second quarter, opening on a 10-2 run in the first 3 minutes. The Wildcats' full-court pressure kept the Warrior offense out of rhythm, resulting in a 35-18 deficit for the Orange and Black entering the locker room. The Wildcats struck first in the third quarter, but it was the Warriors, going on an 11-4 run in the 4 minutes of the second half to cut the lead to 10. After three scoreless minutes for both teams, the Wildcats closed the quarter on a 6-2 run in the final minute to stretch their lead back to 14. The IWU defense was ruthless in the fourth quarter, limiting the Warriors to 10 field goal attempts and forcing 7 turnovers, which led them to the 64-38 victory.
Genevieve Decker led the Warriors with 12 points, 3 rebounds, and 1 block.
Taylor Covington and
Erika Foy added 7 points apiece, while Foy grabbed a team-high 5 rebounds with 3 assists, and Covington had 1 rebound and 1 assist.
Tech returns to action on Wednesday, January 3, in Dearborn, Michigan, as they resume conference play at the University of Michigan-Dearborn. The match-up with the Wolverines is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
