FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women's basketball team hosted Cornerstone University on Saturday afternoon in the Schaefer Center, where the Orange and Black displayed their dominance in a 73-54 win over the Golden Eagles. Tech improves to 8-1 on the season and maintains their unblemished conference record at 6-0.
Out of the gate, Cornerstone looked like they had a hot hand from beyond the three-point line, as they hit two on their opening three possessions to take an early 6-2 lead over the Warriors, but an increase in Tech's defensive intensity held the Golden Eagles without a field goal for the remaining seven and a half minutes of the opening quarter, taking an 18-9 lead going into the second quarter. The defensive pressure didn't go away in the second quarter as the Warriors held the Golden Eagles scoreless for the opening eight minutes and allowed only six points. The Warriors offense was led by
Juliana Burris with 12 first-half points, leading them to a 34-15 lead at the halftime break. Out of halftime, the Golden Eagles threw some zone looks at the Warriors, which forced a few turnovers for Tech, but they quickly figured things out on offense, as the Orange and Black went on to outscore Cornerstone 16-11 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 24. As the Golden Eagles extended their defensive pressure, the Warriors' offense opened up in the fourth quarter, as they posted their highest quarter total of 23, led by
Lauren Barton with 8 points.
Juliana Burris and Laurent Barton led the Warriors in scoring with 17 points apiece. Burris added 9 rebounds and 2 assists, while Barton posted 4 rebounds and 2 assists.
Taylor Covington recorded 10 points, 2 rebounds, and 8 assists.
Tech is back in action on December 17 as the team travels to Hawaii for a two-game stretch. On Sunday the Warriors match up with No. 17 University of Providence (Mont.), with the game scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
