ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. - (
Complete Results) - Indiana Tech made it three in a row as the Warriors captured the 2023 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Men's Wrestling Tournament title at Rochester University. The Orange & Black racked up 165 team points to edge out second-place Marian (161.5). Four Tech athletes earned individual titles, including three repeat winners.
Eric Vermillion earned WHAC Wrestler of the Year and
Thomas Pompei earned Coach of the Year honors.
Vermillion (184 lbs.) became a three-time WHAC champion, having won previously in 2022 and 2021. The two-time NAIA champion knocked off Lourdes' William Speight 4-2 in the first sudden victory period for the three-peat after besting Rochester's Durelly Kline by fall in the first round and earning a 16-0 tech fall over Jerrod Mullins, also of Rochester, in the semis.
Corey Cavanaugh (149 lbs.) and
Nate Wheeler (157 lbs.) were Tech's other repeat champs. Cavanaugh earned victory over teammate
Nick Gates in the 149-pound final after majoring Cyle Wells from Lourdes 8-0 and taking an 8-5 decision over Marian's Aundre Beattly to advance to the final. Wheeler swept the field at 157 with three decisions, including a 6-1 win over Lourdes' Derick Coleman in round two, an 8-2 triumph over Thade Radosa of Cornerstone in the semis, and a 5-1 win over Marian's Bailey Moore in the final.
Braydon Erb (285 lbs.) topped the podium at 285 for his first conference crown. He, like Cavanuagh, faced a teammate in the final, with
Cameron Mayes-Butler also taking an injury forfeit. Erb's path to the title went through Cornerstone's Roberto Perez (fall, 4:58) and Rochester's Jackson Schenk (10-2 major decision).
Matt Gimson and
Elijah Anthony finished 2-3 for Tech at 133. Gimson dropped a narrow 3-1 decision to Marian's Blake Mulkey in the final while Anthony topped Noah Comar from Siena Heights (fall, 1:38) to take third.
Kyle Kantola (141 lbs.) also won a third-place match by fall, pinning Siena Heights' Christopher Sorrow at 0:53.
Gates' run to the 149-pound final saw him take out Cleary's Anthony Wilson by fall and Hunter Nolan of Lourdes in a 7-4 decision. He earned second with a 4-3 decision over Rochester's Anthony Gonzalez.
Elijah Chacon joined Wheeler in the 157-pound bracket and finished fifth with a 2-2 record. He won the fifth-place bout over Rochester's Rico Brown by fall at 1:04.
Jacob Brandt and
Nathan Critchfield went 4-5 at 197, both going 2-2 on the day.
Mayes Butler defeated Paul Nadeau from Rochester by fall at 2:54 to open his heavyweight draw and then progressed to the final with a 5-2 decision against Cornerstone's Sterling McLaughlin.
