MIDWAY, Ky. -- Indiana Tech baseball has officially started for the 2023 season, after their opening series win this weekend at Midway University (Ky.). The Warriors kicked off the season Saturday afternoon with an emphatic 11-10 win in extra innings. The two teams were deadlocked at nine runs apiece, until Parker Bates hit a two-run home run in the top of the tenth inning to give the Warriors the 11-9 lead. Marty McDonald picked up the win for the Warriors throwing 4.1 innings and closing out the game. McDonald gave up just two hits and one earned run in the 17 batters he faced, while striking out seven of them.
On Sunday, the Warriors played a double header to close out the three-game series against Midway, losing the first 8-10, and winning the second 12-7. In the loss, Tech jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and held an 8-5 lead through the top of the seventh before surrendering five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Tristan Osika (3), Jacob Daftari (2), and Christian Mojica (2) picked up the RBIs for the Warriors, while Parker Bates picked up the loss. In the second game of the doubleheader and third game of the series, Tech came out of the gate swinging, with both Daftari and Mojica hitting homers in the first inning. Mojica would homer again just one inning later to put the Warriors up 8-3. He would finish the game going two for three, with two home runs, four RBIs, and two walks. Jayden Reed, Alex Watkins, and Daftari would all finish the game with two RBIs. Ryan Troxel picked up the win for the orange and black, throwing four innings, giving up five hits and four earned runs in the 21 batters he faced.
Next up for the Warriors will be a four-game series against Saint Ambrose University (Iowa) with doubleheaders on both Saturday, February 25th and Sunday, February 26th.
