NASHVILLE -- A strong performance at Vanderbilt University's Music City Challenge on Friday and Saturday was highlighted by a phenomenal distance team performance that saw all seven student-athletes competing earn personal records while two broke school records. The encouraging marks up and down the roster proved the Warriors are rounding into post-season shape on the eve of the coming week's WHAC Championships.
With a unique schedule that saw the majority of Friday dedicated to distance events,
Krista Boese kicked off festivities with a school record in the 3000 meter run. Her time of 10:10.65 topped the previous record of 10:41.15, set by Megan Theismann in 2019.
The Warriors' second school record came from a familiar face in
Lisa Voyles, who competed well in a field of pro and Division I runners to surpass her own 800m mark in 2:08.01. The performance moved the reigning national champion to the #1 spot in the NAIA in the 800.
Voyles' NAIA-leading performance was matched by the women's 4x100 team of
Kiya Pogue,
Soyinne Grenyion,
Taylor Kyle, and
Jamaya Warthen, who ran 45.82 to push into the #1 spot in the nation.
Additional highlights:
- McKenna Palmer moved into the #9 spot in the 1500m with a five-second PR in 4:48.94. Lily Greiwe was right behind with a nine-second PR of 4:51.88.
- Noah Kelsey moved up to #5 in the 1500m with a time of 4:00.21.
- The men's 4x100 team of Kamari Rush, Michael Warner, Parrish Smith, and Esau Haynes won the 4x100 in a very strong 40.61.
- Kiya Pogue hurdled all the way to the #4 all-time mark in the 100h in 13.74. That's a #4 time in the nation.
- Jo'Deci Irby ran a 56.51 and Kayla Moody followed shortly after in 56.65 to impress in the 400 meters. Moody's mark converted her NAIA "B" standard into an "A".
- Miles Gray moved up to #6 all-time in the 400m in 47.43. Eric Pullum was just off the "B" standard in 48.43.
- Krista Boese earned a "B" standard in the 800m in a new Tech #7 mark of 2:15.47. McKenna Palmer also knocked four seconds off her PR to go to #9 in the event in 2:17.49. Haven Evans also had a big PR of 2:19.65.
- Dylan Banda PR'd by nearly three seconds in the 800m in a breakthrough time of 1:55.67. He capped it with a sub-:50 split on the 4x400 relay.
- The women's 4x400 team of Kayla Moody, Jo'Deci Irby, Soyinne Grenyion, and Jamaya Warthen ran a season-best of 3:47.89.
- The "A" men's 4x400 team ran 3:12.56, but was DQ'd for a lane violation, but the "B" squad of Aaron Heisser, Deonsae Dorsey, David Slick, and Dylan Banda won the event in their place in 3:16.56. Their time equaled a "B" standard.
The Warriors return to action on Thursday and Friday when they compete the WHAC Championship meet at Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan.
