FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women's hockey team began their 2023-24 campaign on Friday evening, hosting the first of their two-game series with Lake Superior State University. Tech opened their season in the win column with a 6-2 victory over the Lakers on Friday before notching their second win on Saturday, 5-1.
On Friday,
Megan Yakiwchuk wasted no time opening her goal account for the season as she found the back of the Lakers net just 25 seconds into the first period off assists from
Izzy Pettem-Shand and
Dakota Bowler. However, the Lakers would take advantage of some powerplays and net two to end the first period up 2-1. From that point, the Warriors would score five unanswered with two late second-period goals from
Sophie Kuzminski and
Dakota Bowler before beating the Laker keeper three times in the third.
Michelle Borland scored two of the three for the Warriors, while Kuzminski added to her tally with her second goal. Pettem-Shand added two more assists to bring her total to three on the night, while
Genessie Williams (2),
Payton Gilmour (2), and
Allison Greene (2) also added assists for the Orange and Black.
In game two of the series, the Lakers found the net first to break the tie off the stick of Sophie Jaremko. Searching for a response, the Warriors found it with less than a second on the clock in the first period as
Megan Yakiwchuk scored off an assist from
Dakota Bowler to head into the first intermission tied 1-1. The Orange and Black scored two in both the second and third periods while holding Lake Superior State scoreless as they cruised to a 5-1 win. Yakiwchuk found the net two more times to record her first hat trick of the season, while
Allison Greene and
Michelle Borland earned a spot on the scoresheet as well. The Warriors posted 7 more assists on their last 4 goals from
Hailey Terpstra,
Izzy Pettem-Shand (2),
Michelle Borland,
Lauren Younker,
Mikayla Kalverda, and
Payton Gilmour.
Tech heads to Grand Rapids for their first road game of the season on Friday to take on Davenport University before returning home to finish the series with the Panthers on Saturday. The puck drop on Friday is set for 6:30 p.m., while Saturday's matchup is set to start at 2:30 p.m.
