FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Indiana Tech Warriors Women's hockey team played a two-game series at home, finishing their first weekend back in action, with a split against #14 ranked Niagara University. The Warriors were short by one on Friday night but came back for revenge on Saturday with a win, moving their record to 14-5-1.
In game one, the Warriors found a way to the back of the net by the end of the first period making it 1-0 on a goal scored by
Michelle Borland and assisted by
Emily Foster and
Maddie Beek. Niagara fought back and found a way to tie it early in the second period, making it 1-1. Niagara didn't stop there, and found a way almost ten minutes later, taking the lead with a power play goal, and shortly after reaching a third goal in regular play making it 3-1 for Niagara. The Warriors kicked it in gear and fought to tie the score.
Megan Yakiwchuk scored with twelve minutes left in the game, assisted by
Dakota Bowler, in hopes to climb back to victory. The Warriors fought until the end and gave it their all, but Niagara stood their ground, ending with a 3-2 victory over the Warriors.
Izzy Varner stood in net for a total of 59 and a half minutes for the Warriors, saving a total of 17 shots.
In game two, the Warriors were hungry for revenge, and locked in for round two at the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse. The Warriors found a way to the back of the net scoring two goals in the first period, one in the second, and one in the third.
Megan Yakiwchuk scored an unassisted goal within the first ten minutes of play putting the Warriors up by one.
Lauren Younker quickly followed along scoring not long after in the first period. As the Warriors went into the second period up two goals,
Megan Yakiwchuk scored her second goal of the night, assisted by
Hailey Hudder and
Payton Gilmour. To top it off in the third period,
Dakota Bowler scored a beautiful unassisted goal, to put the Warriors up 4-0 late in the third period. Goalie
Ashtyn Berthiaume stood on her head adding another shutout to her stats, saving a total of 23 shots and playing all 60 minutes for Tech. The warriors finished with a 4-0 victory and successfully accomplished their wanted revenge.
The Warriors are back in action next weekend for another two-game series, a home and away against Aquinas. The Warriors travel to Grand Rapids, Michigan Friday night and play at home on Saturday at 3:30 pm at the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse, looking for a sweep in their second series of the New Year.
