Warriors Down Foresters in Season Opener

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women's basketball team began their campaign on Thursday evening, clashing with Huntington University to open their season for the seventh straight season, with the two previous meetings ending in dramatic fashion. This time, the Warriors kept a steady pace to pull away from the visitors in the Schaefer Center, winning 76-60.

The Warriors got off to a strong start, running out to a 9-2 lead through the opening four minutes. Back-to-back buckets from Huntington's Gabi Melby cut the Warriors' lead to three points, and moments later, a triple from the Foresters cut the gap to one. Tech pushed the lead back to three for a 16-13 scoreline heading into the second quarter on a combined fourteen points from Taylor Covington and Genevieve Decker. The Warriors maintained their grasp on the lead through the second frame, extending it to a seven-point differential twice, but settled for a five-point advantage heading into the break.

Out of the locker room, the Foresters opened the half on an 8-2 run to take their first lead of the contest. Two free throws from Decker on the Warriors' next possession put the Orange and Black back in front and kickstarted a 15-4 run, which gave Tech their first double-digit lead of the night at the 50-40 mark. Tech kept pace throughout the remainder of the game, stretching their lead to as much as eighteen before the final score of 76-60.

Genevieve Decker led the Orange and Black with 25 points, 4 assists, and 4 blocks. Taylor Covington Chipped in 18 points, a team-high 5 assists, and 5 rebounds. Korryn Smith and Jacklyn Crews posted 7 points each, while Jaidyn Gulley led the side in her Tech debut with 8 rebounds and chipped in 4 points.
