FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The #17 ranked Indiana Tech men's soccer team was looking to continue making history on Wednesday night as they went for their sixth straight Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament Championship in a row. The Warriors were tasked with taking down rival RV Aquinas College at Warrior Athletic Field, where ultimately Tech would prevail 2-1 in sudden death overtime on
Liam Arthur's golden goal.
In a game that saw 12 bookings in their first matchup this season back on September 14
th in a close 2-1 Warriors home win to start conference play, and with a trophy and the automatic bid to nationals' spot on the line, tonight was always going to be a tough physical matchup for both sides. The game would start out as you would expect with high energy all about as both sides attempted to assert themselves in the game. The Warriors would start with a flurry of chances and then Aquinas would answer with a few of their own as it was back and forth during the opening ten minutes of play. The Saints would start to take control over the middle part of the half, but that would all go away in the 39
th minute when
Tiago Dias headed home the opening goal of the match following a brilliant dribble down the end line and slotted ball across the goal line by
Alex Mihov. The two Tech captains brought all the momentum back to the Warriors as they went into halftime up 1-0, 45 minutes away from another trophy.
Immediately in the second half, it looked like the Warriors had found a second goal, but the shot from
Andreas Michael would smash off the crossbar and rebound back out into a quick counterattack for Aquinas. Just 16 seconds later, the Saints would score the equalizer after a costly mistake in the back by the Warriors left an open goal for Aquinas to tie it up under two minutes into the half. Tech would respond well though and find their footing again. Back and forth the two sides went, trying to find another goal knowing that the next one would most likely be the winner. Then in the 86
th minute, Aquinas would see red following a bad challenge, putting them down to ten men. The Warriors wouldn't be able to capitalize on the man advantage in the closing minutes as regulation would end at 1-1, sending it to a sudden death overtime period.
Following a Tech corner kick by Mihov that was flicked on past the front post by Dias and bounced around the box, the ball would fall to junior forward,
Liam Arthur. Arthur would take no time delivering the one-time finish, sending the ball into the back of the net to win the game 2:52 into overtime. The native of South Shields, England would sprint over to the Warrior crowd as the Tech bench stormed the field in celebration and his teammates chased after him.
Alex Kyriakides would make four saves in goal for Tech. Arthur's goal clinches a sixth straight WHAC Tournament Championship for Indiana Tech as they continue to make history. No other team has won more than three straight WHAC Tournament Championships and the Warriors have now doubled that streak.
The Warriors are now 13-1-5 overall and haven't lost since the first game of the season! With the win, the Warriors clinch the WHAC's second automatic bid to the NAIA National Tournament and will now await their postseason fate. The men's soccer selection show is set for Saturday, November 16
th at 2pm CT/3pm ET.
