FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women's basketball team took care of business against the University of Michigan-Dearborn Wolverines inside the Schaefer Center on Tuesday evening, 92-61. With the win, head coach
Jessie Biggs picks up another career milestone, becoming the winningest women's basketball coach in Indiana Tech history. Biggs now holds a 302-101 record as the Warriors head coach, surpassing Gary Cobb, who coached from 1989 to 2004 with a record of 301-242.
Out of the gate, the two sides were getting a feel for the game, unable to establish any separation through the opening seven minutes, with the score knotted at thirteen. The Warrior offense came alive in the closing stages of the first quarter, though, going on a 13-5 run in the final two minutes to take a 26-18 lead into the second quarter. For the third straight game, the Orange and Black's defense was dominant in the second quarter, holding the opponent to less than ten points, this time, holding the Wolverines to nine points and forcing five turnovers. Offensively, the Warriors matched their defensive intensity. They were led by
Taylor Covington, who tallied six of Tech's 21 points in the second frame, leading to a 47-27 advantage headed into the midway break.
The opening five minutes of the second half were similar to the opening five of the first half as the two sides matched each other shot for shot, with the Warrior's lead hovering around a twenty-point margin. Four straight points from freshman
Ava Ziolkowski saw the Warriors take their largest lead to that point, 28, with just over two minutes left in the frame, before taking a 67-43 differential into the final quarter.
Avah Smith led the way for the Orange and Black in the fourth quarter, scoring five points as the Warriors cruised to a 92-61 victory.
Tech had three players score in double figures and were led by
Lauren Barton, who tallied fourteen points and grabbed six rebounds.
Taylor Covington had a career game, recording a triple-double with thirteen points, eleven rebounds, and eleven assists.
Jaidyn Gulley added eleven points off the bench and pulled down two boards.
The Warriors move to 6-3 on the season and remain perfect in the WHAC at 3-0. The Orange and Black are back in action on Wednesday, December 4, as they host Siena Heights in the Schaefer Center, starting at 6:00 p.m.
