FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The #17 ranked Indiana Tech men's soccer team hosted the Cleary Cougars for the second time this season on Wednesday evening, but this time the stakes were much higher. Postseason play began today with the WHAC Tournament Quarterfinals as the #2 seeded Warriors would take down the #7 seeded Cougars in a close 1-0 affair.
In their previous meeting, the Warriors would easily handle the Cougars with a 3-0 victory at Warrior Athletic Field. Things wouldn't be as easy today as Cleary would give Tech everything they had, fighting to keep their season alive. Starting off, energy and tension would be through the roof, in the postseason elimination game, but the Orange & Black would control the tempo for the most part. As Tech, took hold of the game, the chances toward goal would start to mount as well. In the 38
th minute, the Warriors would finally find a breakthrough when
Pana Georgiou would score after receiving a brilliant through ball from
Alex Mihov, giving Tech a 1-0 lead before the half.
Tech would start the second half similarly to how they played the first, however would fail to capitalize on multiple high quality scoring chances. As the minutes winded down, Cleary would change tactics trying to find an equalizer to extend their season. The Cougars would put the pressure on the Warriors and register a few opportunities over the final 20 minutes, however the Tech defense would stay strong, learning from their slip up in the regular season finale against Lawrence Tech, and keep the Cougars off the board to close out the game.
Alex Kyriakides would make four saves in goal for the Warriors, picking up his seventh shutout win of the season.
The Warriors improve their overall record to 11-1-5 with the win and advance onto the WHAC Tournament Semifinals to be played against #3 seeded Lourdes University on Saturday, November 9
th at 6pm at Warrior Athletic Field in Fort Wayne, Indiana as they continue their quest for a sixth straight conference tournament championship!
