Warriors Outlast Golden Eagles in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Indiana Tech men's basketball team traveled to Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Saturday afternoon to continue their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference campaign with a contest against the Cornerstone Golden Eagles. In a tight battle, the Warriors came out on top, 72-66, to remain unbeaten at 5-0 in the conference.

Both sides struggled offensively in the opening minutes, as Tech held a 2-1 lead through the first five minutes of the half. Max Perez seemed to get the Warriors' offense going with a jumper at the 13:58 mark, starting an 18-10 run over the next five minutes. A minute later, Jaxson Fugate found the net from long range to give the Warriors a ten-point lead, their largest of the half. Down the stretch of the opening half, the Golden Eagles offense found their rhythm, leveling the score at 29 with 2:11 left to go, but Crew Gibson and Lucas Lyyski were able to find a soft spot in the paint on back-to-back possessions to give the Orange and Black a 33-31 lead heading into halftime.

Out of the midway break, the two sides traded blows over the first ten minutes of the half. The largest lead either side could muster was a four-point advantage held by the Warriors. Tech would hold a narrow lead through the final ten minutes after a triple from Crew Gibson put the Warriors back on top for good at the 9:49 mark. Gibson would lead the Warrior with ten points in the second half, accompanied by Blake Davison and Javel Lewis, who posted nine and eight points on the way to the 72-66 victory.

Gibson led the Warriors with a double-double, scoring fourteen points and grabbing fourteen rebounds. Blake Davison added eleven points, six rebounds, and led the team with three assists. Jaxson Fugate had eleven points, all coming in the first half, two rebounds, and one assist.

The Warriors now sit at 6-3 overall and 5-0 in the WHAC. Tech will host Lourdes University in their next contest on Saturday, December 14. Tip-off against the Gray Wolves is set for 3:00 p.m.
