Women’s Basketball Claim Third Straight WHAC Title

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – It was sweet victory for the Indiana Tech women's basketball team on Wednesday evening as a 63-48 win over the visiting Concordia University Cardinals clinched a third straight Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) regular season title for the Orange and Black. It also marks the sixth time the Warriors have topped the league in the last seven seasons. Tech sits at 24-3 on the season and 21-0 with one game left to go in conference play.

The two squads went toe-to-toe in the opening ten minutes, lobbying for any advantage. After Genevieve Decker started things in the paint, the Cardinals struck back with a 7-0 run. The Warriors' defense stood strong over the next 4 minutes, holding Concordia scoreless while their offense took back the lead.  With the Warriors up 12-9 in the closing moments, it was the Cardinals who struck last as time expired to cut the lead to 12-11. The second quarter was where the Orange and Black did the most damage. The ferocious Warrior defense held the visitors to just 5 points in the frame, which led to a 25-16 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Cardinals struck first with an and-1, which got their supporters into the game. Tech responded quickly with an and-1 on back-to-back possessions to quiet the visiting crowd. The Orange and Black took their largest lead of the game, 20, midway through the third quarter, but from there, the visitors slowly began to chip away at Tech's lead. In the final frame, Concordia cut the Warrior lead to 8 but couldn't get any closer as the Warriors settled for a 15-point 63-48 win.

Genevieve Decker led the way for the Orange and Black with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Erika Foy recorded yet another double-double with 15 points, 13 rebounds, and 1 assist. Juliana Burris and Taylor Covington added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The Warriors travel to Lima, Ohio, for their final regular season game with the University of Northwestern Ohio Racers on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
