Tech Softball Starts Florida Spring Break Trip with Pair of Wins

MELBOURNE, Fla. – It's spring break on the campus of Indiana Tech, but the Indiana Tech softball team is still getting some games in while enjoying the break. The Warriors traveled down to Melbourne, Florida to participate in the Space Coast Games, where they will play ten games over five days at the USSSA Space Coast Training Center. On Sunday, Tech would take on Florida National University and Webber International University (Fla.) winning both games.

The Warriors would battle the Conquistadors of Florida National in game one, taking it 5-2. The Conquistadors would take an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the Warriors would answer with a run in the fourth to tie it at one. In the top of the fifth, Tech would add four runs to take a big 5-1 lead. Florida National would get a run in the final inning but the rally would fall short as the Warriors would come out on top to start their week in the sunshine state. Bella Brock would lead the Orange & Black with two RBIs, while Makena Markle, Maire Trouba, and Jayme Koning would each pick up one. Koning would also make her first start of the season on the mound for the Warriors, throwing a complete game and earning the victory. Over seven innings, Koning would face 32 batters, giving up nine hits and two runs, only one of which was earned, while also throwing three strikeouts.

In the second game of the day, Tech would take on Webber International where the Warriors would win in dominant fashion with an 8-0 win in five innings. Makena Markle would get the Warriors on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a two RBI double down the left field line. Kenadee would pick up an RBI in the fourth inning to build the Tech lead to 3-0. The real damage would come in the bottom of the fifth inning, starting with a two RBI single up the middle from Bella Brock to bring the Warrior lead up to five. Then with one out and the bases loaded, Katie O'Drobinak would hit a base clearing triple through the right side to walk it off for the Warriors as they would enforce the eight-run rule to win the game. O'Drobinak would lead the Warriors, going two for three with three RBIs and two runs scored and a walk. On the mound, Savannah Bravo would deliver another masterclass performance. Bravo would throw a five-inning complete game shutout, allowing just one hit in the process and striking out three batters, earning her seventh win of the season.

Indiana Tech improves to 11-2 overall on the season after the two wins to open their Florida trip. Tech will play Dordt University (Iowa) and Hannibal-LaGrange University (Mo.) on day two of the Space Coast Games at 2:30pm and 4:45pm on Monday, March 11th.
