CHAMPIONS! Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Teams Do It Again

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's and women's track teams hosted the 2024 WHAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships over two days on Thursday and Friday. Both teams would claim yet another WHAC crown as their dominance in the conference continues. The men's side has now won 11 outdoor titles in a row, while the women have won six straight and 11 of the last 13. Records were also being shattered left and right at the championships as eight class records were broken over the two days.

Soyinne Grenyion was named the meet's Most Outstanding Performer on the women's side, given to the athletes whose performance ranks highest on the current NAIA performance list. Her 23.11 mark in the 200m is the fastest in the NAIA. Collins Mokuah was named the Most Valuable Performer of the meet on the men's side for scoring the most points of any competitor. Mokuah won the 110 hurdles and the 400m hurdles. Head Coach Doug Edgar was named the WHAC Coach of the Year for both the men's and women's sides.

Additional meet highlights:
  • Ryah DiGiacomo (36.81m) takes 3rd and Briauna Goins (30.76m) 4th for Tech in the women's javelin.
  • McKale Hood is your league champion in the men's high jump with a mark of 2.02m (6'7.5"). Tayvahr Wright (1.97m) takes 3rd, Jaelan Stewart (1.92m) is 4th, and Jackie Saye (1.92m) is 6th.
  • Leveticus Land lands in 2nd place in the men's shot put with a toss of 14.22m.
  • Mason Murphy (44.48m) and Christian Dixon (43.54m) finish 3rd and 4th in the men's discus.
  • In a javelin competition that started on Thursday, Jayden Tillman (48.91m) and Diego Sekiyama-Nava (48.12) go 5th and 6th for Tech. Sekiyama-Nava goes to #4 on the all-time list in his javelin debut.
  • Justin Harper is Tech's top finisher in the men's 200m in 21.26. It's a PR for Harper and he goes to #9 all-time.
  • Soyinne Grenyion takes the league championship in a new PR and all-time #2 mark of 23.11. She's just .03 off Adella King's school record. Jamaya Warthen is right on her tail in 23.24 to go to #3 all-time.
  • Collins Mokuah takes the league title in the 400 hurdles in 51.72, a new PR that sees him go to #3 on the all-time Tech list. Javon Sanders also gets a PR in 52.54.
  • Denise Turpin scores six big points for Tech in the women's 400 hurdles with a 3rd place finish in 1:06.97.
  • Giulio Romano takes 4th in the men's 800m in 1:54.77.
  • Lisa Voyles takes the title in the 800m in 2:09.01 for her 3rd straight WHAC outdoor title in the event.
  • Esau Haynes (2nd, 10.38), David Slick (3rd, 10.50), Davarri Barthell (4th, 10.63), and Joshua Ballard (7th, 10.84) earn points for the Warriors in the 100m.
  • Indiana Tech takes 2nd through 5th in the women's 100m. Warthen (11.44), Kiya Pogue (11.86), Derica Gibson (11.97), and Niobe Holder (12.10) earn 23 points in the event for the Warriors. Warthen's time is a PR and all-time #2 mark!
  • Miles Grady (47.72) and Braden Crosby (48.42) go 3rd and 4th in the 400m at the WHAC Championships.
  • Soyinne Grenyion wins the WHAC 400m title in a new PR and all-time #2 mark of 53.80! Aaliyah Frederick (56.54) takes 3rd.
  • Collins Mokuah is your league champion in the 110 hurdles in 14.04! Javon Sanders (14.40), Diego Sekiyama-Nava (14.60), and Jackie Saye (14.62) go 3rd, 4th, 5th.
  • On her way to a league title, Kiya Pogue sets the school records in the 100 hurdles in 13.56! She tops the previous mark of 13.60 set by Shayla France in 2014.
  • Giulio Romano finishes 2nd in the 1500m in a new PR and all-time #3 mark of 3:56.20.
  • The men's 4x100 team of Rush, Haynes, Smith, Harper goes 40.16 to take the league title in a new all-time #6 mark in Tech history.
  • Indiana Tech women's 4x100 team of Pogue, Gibson, Holder, Warthen storms to a win in 45.25. The team goes to #8 all-time at Tech.
  • Juan Caballero finishes 3rd in the 3000 steeplechase in 9:30.68. It's a PR and improves his all-time #6 mark at Tech.
  • Jaelan Stewart leads Tech with a 3rd place finish in the long jump in a PR, an NAIA "A", and new all-time #6 mark of 7.29m (23'11"). Jacquez Lawson (5th, 7.06m PR), Darian Long (6th, 7.01m), Joshua Ballard (7th, 6.93m), and Davarri Barthell (8th, 6.92m) also earn points.
  • Evelyn Dolce finishes 2nd in the pole vault in an outdoor PR of 3.75m, which takes her to #3 on the all-time list. Dolce's vault also gives her the freshman record, topping the previous mark of 3.70m set by Jeslyn Zimmerly (2013) and Lindsey Sechrist (2015).
  • Jaelan Stewart leads Tech with a 3rd place finish in the long jump in a PR, an NAIA "A", and new all-time #6 mark of 7.29m (23'11"). Jacquez Lawson (5th, 7.06m PR), Darian Long (6th, 7.01m), Joshua Ballard (7th, 6.93m), and Davarri Barthell (8th, 6.92m) also earn points.
  • LaTarsha Moore and Deanara Mbouge go 2-3 in the women's hammer throw at the WHAC Championships. Moore improves her all-time #2 mark with a toss of 46.09m while Mbouge tops her own #3 mark with a 45.65m.
  • Mason Murphy takes 5th in the men's hammer throw with a toss of 50.50m.
  • For the fourth time in her career, Carlie Turner is your WHAC Long Jump Champion! She now has two indoor and two outdoor titles, winning on Thursday with a best mark of 5.81m. A Tech athlete has won the WHAC women's long jump title six years in a row!
  • Victor Rodriguez (2nd, 4.45m) and Shawn Bailey (7th, 3.85m) earn points for the Warriors in the men's pole vault.
  • The men's 4x800 team of Crosby, Allen, Banda, Agwick runs 7:46.84 to finish 3rd and just miss out on the "B" standard (7:46.00). A great 1:54 final leg by Ngor Agwick secures six points for the team score.
 
The Warriors will now prepare for the NAIA Outdoor National Championships in Marion, Indiana from May 22nd to May 24th. Before nationals, Tech will also send some athletes to last chance meets at Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan on May 8th and North Central College in Naperville, Illinois on May 9th and 10th in an attempt for athletes to qualify for nationals.
