FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's soccer team returned to action Saturday afternoon as the Warriors hosted the 2023 WHAC regular season champions, (RV) Aquinas College, at the Warrior Athletic Field for their first Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) contest of the season.
Through the early stages of the first half, there was little to show from either side as the first fifteen minutes was an intense defensive battle without a shot on goal until a header from the Saint's Jasper Schinkel forced a save from
Alex Kyriakides. Not two minutes later, the Saints had found the opener as Joshua Clemitson showed composure from the penalty spot. The defensive battle resumed through the remainder of the opening half as the Saints could only muster one more shot on target in the half, while Tech put three shots on frame in the opening 45 but was held scoreless.
The hosts got to work quickly out of the halftime break, finding two goals in quick succession. The Warriors found the leveler in the 47
th minute as
Xambos Statiotis beat his defender to the end line and coolly picked out
Mark Mc Daid who beat the keeper from eight yards out. Less than two minutes later, the Warriors took the lead with a similar goal to the first. This time, it was Mc Daid who beat his defender to the through ball and found
Douglas Appiah Kubi waiting for the go-ahead. The remainder of the game was a more open affair, with both sides firing double-digit shot attempts, but neither side could add to their tally as Tech held on to win 2-1.
Alex Kyriakides picked up his third win between the posts this season, ending the game with two saves.
Tech moves to 2-1-2 overall on the season and picks up their first conference win to sit at 1-0-0 in the WHAC. Tech will travel to Defiance College for their next contest on Wednesday, September 18. Kick-off with the conference newcomers is set for 3:30 p.m.
