No. 12 Aquinas Tops Warriors in Four

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women's volleyball team continued their conference campaign on Saturday afternoon by hosting the Aquinas College Saints in the Schaefer Center. Tech fought hard against the No. 12 ranked team in the country, but the Saints ultimately came away with the 3-1 win.

The visitors came out firing in the opening set, forcing Tech onto their heals with an early 10-3 lead. The early deficit proved too much for the Warriors to overcome as the Saints took set one 25-15. After finding themselves in a five-point hole in the early goings of the second set, the Warriors refused to give up without a fight, battling back into the set. A 4-0 run led by Katie Gostovich and Taylor Sorg to go up 17-16 rewarded the Orange and Black with their first lead since the 2-1 mark. Tech would hold onto their narrow lead, eventually taking the set 25-23. Again, in the third set, the visitors jumped to an early lead, taking a 7-1 advantage over the Warriors, but again, the Orange and Black showed their grit by battling all the way back to level the score for the first time in the set at the 24-24 mark. Unfortunately for the Warriors, the comeback effort came up short as Aquinas held on to take set three 26-24. The fourth set was another evenly matched contest. Tied at 16, the Saints took four straight points to lead 20-16, which was immediately followed by a 3-0 run from Tech to bring the game back within one, 20-19. From there, the two sides traded every point, eventually leading to the Saints taking the set 25-23 to claim the match.

Noelle VanOort led the Warriors with fifteen kills, while Gabriela Ortiz-Acevedo led the side with two aces. Sara Gomperts put up forty assists, and defensively, Taylor Sorg and Madison Mayes led the Warriors in blocks and digs with three and fourteen, respectively.

The Warriors move to 8-7 on the season and pick up their first conference loss to move to 2-1 in WHAC play. Tech is back in action on Friday, September 21, as they travel to Dearborn, Michigan, to take on UM-Dearborn at 7:00 p.m.
