Warriors Use Second Half Surge to Get Past Golden Eagles

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Indiana Tech men's soccer team came into their Saturday afternoon matchup with Cornerstone University in good form after their recent 10-0 win over Defiance College earlier this week.

Against the Golden Eagles Saturday, the Warriors would control the game through the first half registering six shots and seven corner kicks, while only allowing two shots and no corners. However, Tech would struggle to convert their chances as the halftime score was the same as it was at the first whistle. Like most WHAC contests, the game would get intense and physical throughout the first half, resulting in three total yellow cards and a red card that put the Warriors down to ten men just before the half.

But the action didn't stop there. After another yellow card early in the second half, the Warriors would finally find the back of the net when Gui Moreira scored on an assist from Alex Mihov and go up 1-0 in the 64th minute. With emotions flying high on the heels of the opening goal, two more yellow cards and a red card would come out from the referee's pocket. Tech would receive the second red card, forcing them to try to defend their lead while playing 9v11 for the final 26 minutes of the game.

Despite being down two players, the Warriors would only allow one shot and two corner kicks in the second half as the Tech defense held strong. Late in the game, the Orange & Black would win a penalty kick after a Cornerstone foul in the box. Liam Arthur would step up to the spot for Tech and convert the penalty in a huge insurance goal that put the Warriors up 2-0 with just under eight minutes to play. Tech would fend off Cornerstone the rest of the way and secure the victory despite the adversity in the game. Alex Kyriakides would make one save and pick up another shutout in goal for the Warriors, his fourth shutout and win of the season.

The Warriors continue to move in the right direction, improving to 4-1-2 overall on the season and 3-0 in WHAC play. Tech will be back at home for their next game against Lourdes University on Wednesday, September 25th at 6pm on Warrior Athletic Field.
