Women’s Soccer Grabs First Win of 2024 with Late Game Heroics

KOKOMO, Ind. – The Indiana Tech women's soccer team picked up their first win of the season on Sunday afternoon in a road game against Indiana University Kokomo.

Tech would enter the game coming off a tough stretch to start the season, but that would all change against the Cougars. The Warrior offense would have their best performance of the season, posting season highs in goals (3) and shots (17). After a back and forth start to the action, Kendall Scribner would open the scoring for Tech with less than three minutes to go before the halftime break to put the Warriors up 1-0. Abbie Hulme and Cassie Palazzolo would pick up assists on the goal. Ursula Romero would come huge for the Warriors early in the second half when she saved a Cougar penalty kick in the 51st minute to preserve the one goal lead for Tech. The action would not stop there though in the second half, as that was just the beginning. The next 30 minutes would feature 11 combined shots and six combined corner kicks in a thrilling up and down game. IU-Kokomo would capitalize on the last of those corners, coming in the 83rd minute, when they would find the equalizing goal to make it 1-1 with just over seven minutes left to play. The Orange & Black would continue to battle in a game that they seemed to deserve more than just a draw. Then in the 87th minute, junior transfer Diana Ramirez would score for the first time in a Tech jersey, coming on an assist from Hulme in what would go down as the game winning goal. However, less than two minutes later, Tech would add an insurance goal to make it 3-0 as Hulme found the back of the net on a pass from senior midfielder Alina Garcia in the closing stages to put an exclamation point on the Warriors' first win of the season. All five Warriors who picked up points in this one would mark their first tallies of the season, but Hulme would have the breakout performance, finishing with a goal and two assists (four points) in the match. Romero would finish the game with four saves in net, including the huge pk stop to open the second half, and earns her first career win for the Orange & Black!

The Warriors improve to 1-4-0 on the season and will play one more nonconference game before starting WHAC play next weekend. Tech will go on the road on Wednesday, September 11th to play Governors State University in Crown Point, Indiana at 1pm.
