Box Score 2 FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech softball team opened its season Tuesday afternoon with a doubleheader against Taylor University at Warrior Park.
In game one of the doubleheader, junior
Kaelie Kugler would pick up the first RBI of the season with an infield single in the bottom of the second inning to score
Kiersten Delaney. The Warriors would take that 1-0 lead into the fifth inning before Taylor would score on an error to tie the game. In the bottom of the sixth, the Warriors would regain the lead on a sacrifice fly by
Melissa Cabrera that allowed
Haylee Pruitt to score. Up 2-1 heading into the final inning, the Warriors were three outs away from their first win of the season. However, the Trojans had other plans, scoring on another Warrior error to tie the game and then taking the lead on a two out RBI single to left center field. Tech would not go down without a fight though. After being hit by a pitch, Trouba would steal second and advance all the way home on an error to tie the game at three and send the game into extra innings. Then, two innings later with runners on second and third, Trouba would put the ball in play to help get
Carly Basham across for the winning run as the Warriors walk it off in their season opener. Junior ace
Savannah Bravo would start on the mound for the Warriors pitching her first complete game of the season on opening day. Bravo would throw a staggering 153 pitches across her nine innings of work, finishing with eight strikeouts, eights hits allowed, three runs, only one earned, and the win.
In game two, the Trojans would get out to an early lead with two first inning runs before adding three in the third inning to go up 5-1.
Melissa Cabrera would pick up an RBI double in the second inning to score the Warriors first run of the game. In the bottom of the third inning, Tech would get two more runs back with
Carlye Walter hitting an RBI single and then scoring later in the inning on a double steal. The next three innings would go scoreless as the Warriors trailed 5-3 heading into the final inning of play, but Tech would be unable to score as they would drop game two of the opener. Walter would also earn the start on the mound for the Warriors in game two. The sophomore would pitch a complete game with eight strikeouts, allowing seven hits, five runs with four earned runs.
Indiana Tech starts the season at 1-1 after splitting with Taylor in their opening series of the new season and will play home doubleheaders the next two days against Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) on Wednesday, February 26th starting at 12:30pm and #10 Marian (Ind.) on Thursday, February 27th starting at 2pm.
