Men’s Soccer Upsets #2 William Penn in Season Opener

OSKALOOSA, Iowa – The Indiana Tech men's soccer team opened the 2025 season on the road against #2 William Penn University. The #19 ranked Warriors would come away with a 2-1 upset victory over the Statesmen spurred by two second half goals.

There would be no shortage of excitement to kick off the new season as the Warriors would open the 2025 campaign with a top 20 matchup. The action started early as the Statesmen would get on the board first through a penalty kick in the ninth minute of the game. William Penn would outshoot Tech 6-2 in the first half, but neither goalie would make a save, as the Statesmen led 1-0 at the break. The second half would get off to a quick start as the Warriors found the back of the net to tie the game at one. Mark Mc Daid would be the first Warrior to get his name on the scoresheet in the 2025 season, scoring on a pass from Emerson Nieto. Tramaine Lawson would also pick up an assist on Mc Daid's goal. Just under five minutes later, Nieto would pick up a second assist after a perfect cross into the box for Joao Gustavo to head home and give Tech a 2-1 lead. The Warrior defense would hold strong over the final 38 minutes to keep the Statesmen off the board and secure the victory. Despite being outshot 13-9, Tech didn't allow a single shot on target from open play. Gustavo would be credited with the game winning goal in his debut in the Orange & Black. Cuba Grant would also make his debut for the Warriors on Thursday and would earn the win in goal.

Tech heads back to Fort Wayne with a 1-0-0 record and will gear up for their next game on Tuesday, August 26th in the Battle of the Fort, hosting the University of Saint Francis at Warrior Athletic Field at 6pm.
