Fort Wayne Stays Orange After Warriors Take Battle of the Fort

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's soccer team defended their turf on Tuesday evening in their home opener as they hosted cross-town foe the University of Saint Francis in the classic Battle of the Fort. The Warriors would take the contest 2-0 to keep Fort Wayne orange and extend their winning streak against Saint Francis to four games in a row.

Despite the Warriors coming into the game as the favorites as the #19 ranked team in the country and coming off a win over #2 ranked William Penn, Saint Francis would hold their own throughout the first half. Both sides would register six total shots, however the Cougars would put five on frame, compared to just one for the Warriors, forcing Tech goalkeeper Cuba Grant to make some saves early to keep the game tied at zero. In the second half, Grant would come up big again in the 62nd minute, making a diving save on a brilliant free kick from Saint Francis. From defense to offense, Grant did it all in this one. In the 76th minute, the grad transfer would send a long ball over the top, in behind the Cougars defense, where Filip Maksimovic would flick the ball on to a dashing Mark Mc Daid who was in on breakaway. Mc Daid would calmly slot the ball home to send the home crowd into a frenzy and put the Warriors up 1-0. Tech would see out the game over the next 14 minutes only allowing one USF shot over that span. In the closing seconds of the game, Fernando Cuevas would rip a volley from roughly 40 yards out toward goal that would slice over the goalie's head and into the back of the net to put an emphatic finish on the game. Cuevas' goal made it 2-0 for the Warriors and that would be the final as Tech moves to 2-0-0 on the season. Cuba Grant picks up the win in goal for the Orange & Black, making six saves in a man of the match performance.

The Warriors will be on the road for quite some time as they gear up for a gauntlet of a schedule. Tech will play seven straight road games before being back at home on September 27th. Three of their next five games will be against top ten opponents with their next match coming against (RV) Huntington University on Monday, September 1st in Huntington, Indiana at 6pm.
