Box Score FORT WAYNE, Ind.—Led by 29 points from junior transfer Rontray Chavis, the Indiana Tech men's basketball team won its season opener, 85-70 over Wilberforce University on Saturday night at the Schaefer Center.

The Warriors (1-0) opened the game on a 12-2 run, playing solid defense and getting to the basket seemingly at will against the Bulldogs (0-1). Wilberforce got to within five points, 22-17, at the 6:02 mark in the first half, but Tech quickly increased the lead back to 16 points on a Derek Hamner jumper with 1:34 to play in the period, giving the Warriors a 39-23 lead, before allowing a Bulldogs jumper just before the half to lead 39-25 at the break.

The Orange and Black shot 42.9 percent (12-28) from the field, 33.3 percent (2-6) from three and 72.2 percent (13-18) from the line while holding WU to 22.9 percent (8-35), 12.5 percent (2-16) and 50 percent (7-14), respectively.

Nick Lewis led all scorers will 11 points in the first half, with Hamner adding nine and Chavis netting eight to go with six rebounds, tied for the team lead with John Cooksey.

After a back and forth start in to the second half, the Warriors reached their largest lead of the game, 18 points, 55-37, with 14:31 to play. The closest the Bulldogs got was 12 points several times in the final period, however, the Warriors defense stood strong to maintain a double-digit lead, winning 85-70.

Despite allowing WU to shoot 40.5 percent (17-42) in the final period, including a 31.6 percent (6-19) mark from behind the arc and 5-9 from the free throw line, the Warriors were able to pick it up on the offensive send led by 21 points from Chavis. The Warriors shot 50 percent (28-56) from the floor and 72.2 percent (26-36) from the charity stripe.

Cooksey finished with seven points and a game-high 12 rebounds while Lewis added 18 points and Hamner finishes with 15.

Tech will face cross-town rivals St. Francis (Ind.) on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. It will be the Warriors first road contest of the season.
