Watkins Leads @INTechMBB to a 62-56 Victory Over Aquinas

Box Score FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Freshman point guard Tanner Watkins continued his hot shooting, draining 4-of-9 three's in route to 16 points to lead the Indiana Tech men's basketball team to a 62-56 victory over Aquinas on Wednesday night at the Schaefer Center.

It was a slow moving first half as the first basket didn't come until the 17:46 mark, a layup by Parker Stouffer to give the Warriors (4-4, 1-0) the 2-0 lead. The two teams tied four times and the lead changed hands eight times with Tech taking the period's largest lead, five points, at the 15:27 mark. The Saints (2-2, 1-1) largest lead was two points which they held several times in the half, but it was the Orange and Black who took a three point, 33-30 lead into the break.

Aquinas won inside, scoring 16 points in the paint to 14 by Tech, they also held a slim 6-3 edge in second chance points and an 11-7 margin in bench points, however, the Warriors won points off turnovers, netting 11 points on five turnovers while the Saints tallied just two points on Tech's three turnovers.

The Warriors shot 41.9 percent (13-for-31) from the floor; including a 46.2 percent (6-for-13) mark from behind the three-point line. Watkins led all scorers at the half with nine points, going 3-for-5 from behind the arc. Aquinas was just as productive, finishing the half 13-for-29 (44.8%) from the field including a 3-for-7 (42.9%) mark from behind the arc.

It was much of the same in the second half as both teams slowed the game down, maximizing their possessions and trading baskets for much of the half. The Warriors were eventually able to break away, using an 8-2 run with five minutes to play to take a 10-point, 57-47 lead. Tech hit their free throws down the stretch to keep the Saints at bay, walking away with a six point, 62-56 win.

The difference in the game was the three-point line as the Warriors finished the contest 8-for-19 (42.1%) from long range while the Saints went 3-for-10 (30%) from behind the arc. Tech also outshot Aquinas from the floor, finishing the game 24-for-52 (46.2%) compared to a 23-for-51 (45.1%) night for the Saints.

Watkins led all scorers with 16 points, with John Cooksey adding 13 and Jeremy Wohltman finishing with 10. Rontray Chavis added nine points and led the team with nine rebounds.

Kazen Kolin led the Saints with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Warriors return to action on Saturday, Nov. 23 when they travel to Southfield, Mich. for a WHAC contest against the Blue Devils of Lawrence Tech. Tip is scheduled for 3 p.m.
