Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEW HAVEN, Ind. -- The Indiana Tech softball team dropped two against Cornerstone at Havenhurst Park on Saturday. It was senior day for Tech and the Golden Eagles (17-11, 9-5 WHAC) defeated the Warriors (6-21, 4-12) 8-2 in the first game, but Tech kept it close in the second game, finishing the game down by one, 3-2.

GAME ONE | CU 8, IT 2 | BOX SCORE

The Golden Eagles led from the first inning, scoring eight runs on nine hits, aided by three Warrior errors. Cornerstone scored two in each of the first and third innings before putting up four in the seventh while Tech score its pair of runs in the seventh on four hits.

Three straight hits to lead off the game produced the first pair of runs for the Golden Eagles and after a scoreless second, the visitors plated a pair in the third, the fourth tally coming on a dropped fly ball from the Warriors.

Tech got one hit in the first and stranded two runners and didn't record another hit until the seventh. In the top of the frame another Warriors error extended the inning and a single and three-run home run made it 8-0.

Down to their last out, Jenevie Rivas started a rally, singling through the hole on the right side and Hannah Foltz followed with a single. Senior Kelsey Kline drew a walk to load the bases and then Tori Simper doubled to score Tech's two runs.

Simper (4-7) got the start and allowed eight runs, three earned, on eight hits over seven inning while striking out three. Her counterpart, Heidi Walburg was stellar, allowing just two runs on four hits over her seven frame, striking out three as well.

Four difference Warriors recorded hits with Simper recording the only two RBIs.

GAME TWO | CU 3, IT 2 | BOX SCORE

In the second game of the twin-bill, the Warriors suffered heartbreak as they stranded the tying run at third to fall, 3-2.

Cornerstone took the early lead in the second when Megan Oberst touched up Tech starter Taylor Craven for a solo home run. It was one of two hits the junior allowed until the sixth.

The offense picked up its pitcher in the bottom of the third as Kylie Hill led off with a single and Bailey Dembinski was hit-by-pitch a batter later to put two-on and nobody out. Sophia Johantgen singled up the middle to plate Hill and senior Patrice Suplicki reached on an error to load the bases. Unfortunately a double-play and a lineout ended the Warriors threat, keeping the score tied at one.

Neither team really threatened again until the top of the sixth when three consecutive one-out hits ended the day for Craven and plated a run for the 2-1 Cornerstone lead. Rivas was called on in relief and a single and a sacrifice fly made it 3-1, however, Rivas induced a pop-up to end the inning, stranding two runners.

In the bottom half, Rivas got one run back in a hurry as she homered to right center to lead off the inning cutting the lead to one, 3-2. Rivas then worked around a leadoff double in the seventh to give the Warriors a chance in the home half.

The Golden Eagles brought in game-one winner, Walburg, for a save opportunity in the bottom of the inning and the Warriors made it tough. Dembinski led off the inning by reaching on an error and a two-out single by Jessica Cotton put runners at the corners with two outs, but Walburg shut the door and record the save.

Craven (0-3) pitched well enough to win, allowing just three runs on five hits over 5 1/3 innings while striking out two. Rivas did her job in relief, allowing just two hit in her 1 2/3 innings.

Rachel Nelson (6-5) got the win, striking out six while allowing two runs on five hits in her six innings of work.

Hill led the offense with two hits, finishing 2-for-3 while scoring a run. Rivas was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI and Johantgen also drove in a run.

The Warriors will conclude their regular season on Monday, Apr. 21 when they host Aquinas with conference tournament seeding on the line. The games will be played at Havenhurst Park with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
