FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech men's soccer team was churning on all cylinders Wednesday night as they defeated Trinity Christian College (Ill.), 6-0, in their home opener.
"It was a great game and a perfect way to cap off the night after a strong performance by the women's team," said head coach
David Bokhart. "We can sharpen up in a few areas, but the entire squad played well and the guys combined on some great goals."
Tech was able to strike quickly and often to overmatch the Trolls.
Ryan Hayhurst got the scoring started in the 17th minute when he headed in
Landon Cochran's corner kick to give the Warriors the early 1-0 lead.
Just over 14 minutes later,
Brennan Cochran took a through ball from
Mitch Smith and danced around the keeper to put it in the back of the net and give the Orange and Black a 2-0 lead.
Chad Brooks gave the Warriors a 3-0 lead with just five minutes before halftime as he took the pass from
Nyi Nyi Aung and blasted it in the upper right corner.
The scoring outburst continued after halftime, as
Landon Cochran was fouled inside the box and promptly blasted his penalty kick past the Troll keeper in the 56 minute. Just over two minutes later, Igor Guanes rifled one in after tracking down
Ruben Leonardo's pass to give the Warriors a 5-0 lead.
Aung would convert a penalty kick in the 81st minute to stretch the lead to six.
Sophomore
Logan Kelly made five saves in his season debut to record the shutout, the first of his career.
Indiana Tech (1-1-0) heads down to Indianapolis for a neutral site matchup with Bethel College (Ind.) at Michael A. Carroll Stadium on Saturday at 3 p.m. The match will be a part of the Youth Soccer Month Celebration, with a youth match before the Warriors and concluding with Jacksonville Armada FC and Indy Eleven playing at 7:30 p.m.
"We have a tough stretch coming up," Bokhart said. "So now we need to recover well and get ready for Bethel, Taylor and Judson over the next nine days."
