Box Score 3 WESTFIELD, Ind. – The Indiana Tech softball team opened its 2019 season Friday afternoon at Grand Park as they split with Taylor University, winning 2-0 in game one and falling 3-2 in game two, before defeating NCAA Division III foe Franklin College, 15-10, in the nightcap.
Amanda Shonka set the tone for Tech in game one as she threw a one-hit shutout against the Trojans, recording two strikeouts over seven excellent innings.
Emily Martin got the Warriors on the scoreboard in the top of the third as she drove in
Brianna Glass from second while
Kari LaFreniere knocked in
Ashley Alvey one inning later to make it a 2-0 game.
Taylor got out ahead quickly in game two as they scored three runs on four hits and two walks in the top of the first.
Jaden Romero would come on in relief in the second and scatter six hits over the final six innings to keep the Orange and Black in the game. Tech cut the lead to two in the bottom of the sixth as
Abigail Zwicker came around to score on a single from
Nicolle Sierra and while the Warriors appeared in business with two on and no outs, the Trojans would wiggle out of the jam with the lead intact.
A two-out double from Glass gave Tech hope in the bottom of the seventh while
Ali LeNoue drove her in in the next at-bat to make it a run-one game. Martin followed that up with a single to get the winning run on base, but the Trojans would escape another jam and salvage the split.
Full stats were not available from the win over Franklin.
Tech (2-1) returns to Westfield on Sunday as they take on Midway College in a tripleheader. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. from Grand Park.
