FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The No. 16-ranked Indiana Tech baseball team opened up its home schedule Tuesday evening as they swept the University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH) at Warrior Field in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) action, winning game one in eight innings, 11-1, and 8-5 in game two.
Glen McClain put Tech up top in the bottom of the first with a solo home run on the first pitch he saw, crushing the pitch in between Evans-Kimmell Frank and Anne Oropeza Hall past the left center field wall. The Warriors put up single runs in the next two innings before McClain launched his second homer of the night on a 2-0 pitch in the fifth to make it a 5-0 game.
UNOH got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth, but the hosts responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to make it an 8-1 game thanks to a pair of walks with the bases loaded and a wild pitch.
Taylor Nychyk ended the game with a pinch-hit two run homer with two outs in the eighth inning to enact the 10-run rule.
Nate McBroom improved to 3-3 on the season after going six innings on the hill, allowing just one run on four hits.
Dan Shaw picked up three strikeouts in an inning of work while
Branson Dossen picked up two RBI without recording a hit.
The Racers showed some fire in game two as they pushed across a pair of runs in the second and sixth innings to go up 5-2. Reliever Andres Medina shut down the Warriors in 4.1 innings of work and struck out seven batters, but Tech was able to take advantage of the UNOH bullpen in the eighth inning. Dossen led off the inning with a walk, the first of five in the frame, as the hosts pushed across three runs with the bases loaded and not having to put the ball in play.
Reese Olden put Tech ahead with a two-RBI single on a full count while McClain capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to give the hosts an 8-5 lead.
Shaw finished out the game with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth to end the game with six in 3.2 innings and did not allow a hit in his second outing of the evening.
Grant Heisinger drew a pair of walks while
Jacob Alvidrez and Dossen both had doubles.
Tech (18-10, 5-1 WHAC) returns to action on Wednesday as they make the short trip across town to face off with the University of Saint Francis. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. from the ASH Centre World Baseball Academy.
