CLEVELAND – Former Indiana Tech baseball player and 2015 graduate
Derek Morgan helped his cousin, New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, win the 2019 Major League Baseball Home Run Derby Monday night at Progressive Field as part of the MLB All-Star Festivities.
Morgan was Alonso's batting practice pitcher, helping the rookie sensation win the event by defeating Cleveland's Carlos Santana (14-13), Atlanta's Ronald Acuña, Jr. (20-19), and Toronto's Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s (23-22), becoming just the second rookie in MLB history (Aaron Judge) to win the annual long ball contest.
A three-year member of the Warrior baseball team after transferring from St. Bonaventure University, Morgan was named to the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) All-Academic Team as a senior and a member of the 2013 Tech team that won the WHAC Tournament and qualified for the NAIA National Championship Opening Round.
