GAME 1 | TECH 7, GVU 1 | BOX SCORE
Freshman right-hander
Jared Harvey got his first start of the season in game one and he didn't disappoint, getting his first win as he pitched a complete game (7 innings) allowing just one run on five hits with two strikeouts.
It wasn't all smooth sailing for the Fort Wayne native as back-to-back two-out singles and a wild pitch put the visitors up one in the top of the first. The offense came to play though, as a
Thomas Barnes single got the inning started and a
Justin Kalusa sacrifice moved the runner over. Barnes' stolen base put him 90-feet away and
Romer Portes doubled him home to tie the game.
Kalusa was involved in the Warriors second run in the third as he singled and advanced to second on an error, coming around to score on Portes' second RBI of the game for the 2-1 lead.
Things were quiet again until the bottom of the fifth when the Orange and Black broke the game open. The top of the order came through again as a Barnes single put runners on first and second for Kalusa who continued his hot hitting with an RBI double scoring Dezmon Nunn. A Portes walk loaded the bases and
Bryan Brudi delivered a two-run single to push the lead to four, 5-1. Another walk loaded the bases for Ray Calloway who delivered a sacrifice fly and another pair of walks plated the Warriors fifth run of the inning.
Tech scored their seven runs on seven hits while holding the Vikings to just one run on five hits with GVU also committing one error.
Barnes finished 2-for-3 with two runs; Kalusa was 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI while Portes went 2-for-3 with one run and two RBIs. Brudi also recorded two RBIs and scored once. Barnes, Kalusa, Portes, Brudi and
Alex McKinstry each recorded a stolen base.
GAME 2 | TECH 11, GVU 12 | BOX SCORE
It was a different game in the second of the twin-bill as a late-inning rally fell short for the Warriors. Tech scored 11 runs on 14 hits but committed six errors while the Vikings scored 12 runs on 14 hits with two errors.
It was a back and forth game that saw at least one run per inning except for the sixth. Tech was the visitors for the second contest and after a scoreless top of the first; Grand View got two runs on two hits aided by the Warriors first error of the game.
Much like game one, Tech's bats came to life in the second inning, scoring three runs on three hits, aided by the Vikings two errors.
Wes Darrow got things started with a single and after advancing to second on an error, moved to third on a single by
Jacob Dunnichay.
Zach Pfafman delivered an RBI single and a
Derek Morgan RBI groundout tied the game.
Tyler Denniston then reached on an error by the second baseman to take the 3-2 lead.
The Orange and Black seemed to have the game in hand in the third when four runs on four hits pushed the lead to five, 7-2. Kalusa singled to lead-off the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Portes reached on a hit-by-pitch and a one out single from Darrow loaded the bases again for the Warriors. Dunnichay's two-run double pushed the lead to three, and Morgan then came through with a two-out, two-run single for the five-run advantage. The lead was again reduced to two as the Vikings scored three runs on four hits and another Warrior error in the bottom of the inning.
Tech had the answer though, in the top of the fourth, as Barnes drew a lead-off walk and stole second coming around to score on a two-out, RBI single by Brudi. Darrow followed with an RBI double to stretch the lead back to four, 9-5. The Vikings scored their sixth run of the game on two hits, aided by yet another Tech error.
The Warriors failed to score in the fifth, but couldn't do the same to Grand View in the bottom half. The Vikings scored six runs on five hits on three errors. Tech was able to put a rally together in the seventh, but fell one run shy of the tie.
Josh Carroll's pinch-hit single got the inning started and Morgan followed with a single of his own and a two-out, hit-by-pitch to Barnes loaded the bases. Kalusa recorded his second hit of the game and two more RBIs to get Tech to within one. Portes followed with a walk to load the bases again, but a strikeout ended the game.
Reece Phillips got the start and a no-decision as he allowed six runs, just one earned, on eight hits over three innings.
Marc Brandenburg took the loss for the Warriors while
Jacob Koehring and TJ Lutz also saw time on the mound. Kellen Glover got the win for the Vikings, tossing 2 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and Pat Winnike got the save with just 1/3 of an inning pitched.
Darrow and Dunnichay each finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored with Darrow driving in one and the latter tallying two RBIs. Kalusa also had two RBIs while Morgan added three RBIs.
The Warriors return to the field tomorrow when they face Warner University at 3:30 p.m.
