@INTechBaseball Splits Twin-Bill with @IUSAthletics

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEW ALBANY, Ind. – The Indiana Tech baseball team finally took the field against Indiana University Southeast on Sunday, splitting the doubleheader with a 7-6 win in game one and a 6-17 loss in game two.

With the split, the Warriors are now 5-5-1 on the season while the Grenadiers improve to 9-8 in 2014.

GAME 1 | TECH 7, IUSE 6 | BOX SCORE

In the first game of the twin-bill, the Warriors recorded their second one-run win of the season, scoring in the top of the seventh to defeat the home team, 7-6.

Thomas Barnes scored the winning run after reaching on an error to lead off the seventh. Justin Kalusa moved Barnes to second and a wild pitch put him on third for Bryan Brudi who delivered a two-out, RBI single up the middle to win the game.

It was a quiet opening third of the game with just five base runners and none reaching third. That all changed in the Tech half of the fourth as Brudi reached on an error with one out to open the flood gates. Josh Carroll followed with a single and a double steal put runners in scoring position for Brian Hakes who drove in Brudi for the 1-0 lead. After a Geronimo Berroa, Jr. hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, Jacob Dunnichay came through with a two-out, two-run double to extend the lead to three. A Barnes single and Kalusa double added three more tallys for Tech, giving them six runs on five hits and an error in the inning.

The Grenadiers answered back with a single run on three consecutive hits in the bottom of the fourth and then three more hits in the fifth scored three more runs to cut the Tech lead to two, 6-4. A strike-him-out, throw-him-out double play ended the Warriors threat in the sixth and IU-Southeast tied the score with two more hits in the sixth.

That set the stage for the Orange and Black's rally in the seventh and sophomore Connor McLaughlin secured his first save of the season, shutting down the home team in the seventh.

Clay Wallace got the start and was solid until the fifth as he allowed four runs on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings while striking out seven and walking just one. Curtis Wise got his second win of the season, tossing 1 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits with one walk and one strikeout. McLaughlin got the save, allowing just one walk in the seventh.

Kalusa and Dunnichay each finished with one hit and two RBIs while the latter also scored a run. Barnes also recorded a hit while scoring twice and driving in one.

GAME 2 | IUSE 17, TECH 6 | BOX SCORE

Freshman left-hander Reece Phillips got the call in game two and suffered his worst outing of the season. The Grenadiers, who left seven runners on base in game one, jumped all over Phillips in the first inning. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases and a double-play scored a run. Two doubles, a single and an error gave the home team five runs on five hits and one error in the inning.

IU-Southeast added three more runs in the second to increase the lead to eight. A Kalusa single scored Ray Calloway in the top of the third to put Tech on the board, but another five runs on four hits in the third gave the home team a 13-1 lead.

Carroll got a Warriors rally started in the fourth with a one-out double to center. Dezmon Nunn followed with a pinch-hit RBI double and later scored on an IU-Southeast error. Tyler Denniston drove home Calloway with a two-out RBI single and Barnes and Kalusa each added RBI singles to cut the lead to two, 6-8.

Unfortunately, the Grenadiers could not be held down as the home team added four more runs on four hits and an error for the 17-6 win.

Tech finished with 12 hits in the contest but left seven runners on base. Kalusa finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Nunn and Barnes added two hits. Calloway scored twice, drove in one and finished 1-for-4.

Seven Warriors pitchers took the mound in the loss with Jared Harvey being the highlight, tossing 2 1/3 innings of one-hit baseball while striking out two.

The Orange and Black return to the field on Wednesday, Mar. 12 with a doubleheader against Northwestern Ohio. The contest is scheduled to be played in Lima, Ohio with first pitch at 1 p.m.
