Box Score MUNCIE, Ind. – On a windy and blustery day, the Indiana Tech baseball team scored eight runs and belted out 11 hits at Ball Diamond on Tuesday, but it wasn't enough as Ball State tallied 13 runs on 14 hits for the victory. The loss drops the Warriors to 13-12-1 on the season while the Cardinals improve to 19-9.
It was a tough first inning for Tech starter
Brian Gremaux as the Cardinals' clean-up hitter, Stayton, took the freshman right-hander's pitch over the right field wall for the early 2-0 lead.
Stayton wasn't the only one taking advantage of the stiff wind in right field as
Romer Portes quickly responded with a solo home run to lead off the second inning.
Jacob Dunnichay followed with a walk and came around to score three batters later on
Derek Morgan's sacrifice fly, tying the score.
Tech took its first lead of the contest in the top of the third as
Bryan Brudi, who made a spectacular catch in the first inning, led off with a walk, scoring two batters later on a passed ball. It was short lived though, as BSU came right back with two more runs on two hits and two walks. It looked as though Gremaux would escape the inning without any damage after walking the first two batters, but back-to-back two-out singles gave the Cardinals the lead, 4-3.
After a silent fourth for Tech, the Cardinals got another two-out RBI single in the bottom of the inning to push the lead the two, 5-3.
Another Ball State pitching change led to more runs for the Warriors as Brudi led off the inning with a single and then Portes, batting from the left side this time, sent another ball over the right field fence, tying the score at five.
TJ Lutz successfully pitched out of a two-on, two-out jam to end the fifth and the Orange and Black went back to work on offense as
Thomas Barnes led off with a single, coming around to score on an RBI single by Portes for the 6-5 lead.
Ball State's offense came to life in the sixth, though, as the home team plated five runs on six hits, sending eight batters to the plate in the frame. It's all BSU needed, extending the lead to four, 10-6.
In the seventh, the Warriors were able to chip away at the lead, as
Brian Hakes got things started with a single and
Alex McKinstry followed with a double and Morgan promptly singled to right, scoring Hakes. After a strikeout, Barnes beat out a would-be double-play ball, allowing McKinstry to score from third for Tech's eighth run of the contest.
The Cardinals added three more runs on one hit and an error in the seventh to account for the final score, 13-8.
Lutz took the loss, falling to 1-1 on the season while Connor McClaughlin had the best outing in relief, tossing a perfect eighth.
Portes stole the show offensively, finishing the contest 3-for-4 with two home runs, four RBIs and two runs scored. Brudi, Hakes and Morgan each collected two hits for the Warriors.
Tech returns to action on Saturday, Apr. 5 when they travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. to face Davenport for a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
