Gremaux, Kalusa, Wise Stellar on the Mound for Tech

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech baseball team scored 21 runs on 24 hits in their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference sweep of Northwestern Ohio on Wednesday at Warriors Stadium. Tech won game one, 11-1 before taking game two, 10-1.

The Warriors improved to 15-16-1 with the win and 7-5 in conference play while the Racers drop to 20-12 overall and 8-4 in WHAC contests.

GAME 1 | IT 11, UNOH 1

For the first time this season, the Warriors pitching and offense came together as freshman right-hander, Brian Gremaux, took the ball in game one and scattered seven hits over eight innings, allowing one run while striking out four and walking two to earn his second win of the season. The offense provided plenty of support, pounding out 10 hits and plating 11 runs.

Gremaux set the tone in the first as a hit-by-pitch and back-to-back singles loaded the bases, but the freshman induced a double-play and a fly out to escape the inning with just one run, the lone blemish on his day. The offense picked up the New Haven, Ind. native with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the frame.

Thomas Barnes led off with a walk and a Justin Kalusa single and passed ball put runners at second and third with none out. Romer Portes followed a batter later with a one-out sacrifice fly and Jacob Dunnichay followed with a two-out single to plate Kalusa for the go-ahead tally.

After two quick outs in the second, Gremaux allowed a single and hit another batter, before getting a strikeout to end the frame. The offense went to work again as Alex McKinstry led off with a walk, advancing to second on a sacrifice by Derek Morgan and a Geronimo Berroa, Jr. walk and Barnes hit-by-pitch loaded the bases. Kalusa then beat out a double-play ball for an RBI and after stealing second, scored on Bryan Brudi's two-out, two-run single for the 5-1 lead.

After a quiet third, Gremaux stranded another Racers run at third base in the fourth thanks to another double play. Both offenses settled down until the bottom of the sixth when Tech plated two more tallies on two hits with Barnes delivering an RBI double and later scoring on a balk.

A McKinstry sacrifice fly in the seventh made the score 8-1 and the Warriors were able to end the game early in the eighth as Brudi plated Tyler Denniston with an RBI ground out and Portes' two-run double scored Kalusa and Barnes for the 10-run mercy rule.

Barnes, Kalusa and Brudi each finished with two hits with Barnes and Kalusa each scoring three times and driving in a run while Brudi scored once and drove in three.

GAME 2 | IT 10, UNOH 1

Kalusa got the call in game two for Head Coach Kip McWilliams and had his best outing of the season, allowing two hits over four shutout innings while walking three and striking out three. Curtis Wise pitched in relief and earned his first save of the season scattering five hits over three innings, allowing one run while striking out a batter.

Game two was full of missed chances in the first three innings as the two teams combined to strand seven base runners in the first three frames with the Racers stranding two more in their half of the fourth before the Warriors hung a crooked number, scoring seven runs on seven hits to for the lead.

It was a slow start to the inning as Tech made two quick outs but seven consecutive hits plated seven runs, capped off by a Portes three-run home run to break the game open. McKinstry got things going with a single and Morgan followed suit. Wes Darrow was called on to pinch hit and delivered a two-run double, prompting a pitching change. Barnes greeted the new pitcher with an RBI single, advancing to third on a Kalusa double and scoring a batter later on Brudi's single. Portes then cleared the bases with his home run and a 7-0 lead.

Wise replaced Kalusa after a leadoff single in the Racers half of the fifth and stranded the bases loaded to escape the inning unscathed. Tech added three tallies in the sixth on another Portes three-run home run, scoring Brudi and Kalusa for the 10-0 lead.

The lone UNOH run came in the seventh on a two-out double to account for the 10-1 victory.

Portes was the offensive star; finishing the contest 3-for-4 with two runs scored and six RBIs while Kalusa was 3-for-3 with a run scored while his courtesy runner, Denniston, also scored a run.

The Warriors continue their home stand with a WHAC doubleheader on Saturday, Apr. 12 when they host Siena Heights. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
