Brian Hakes drove home
Jacob Dunnichay in the bottom of the 10th for the walk-off win in the second game as the Indiana Tech baseball team swept Lourdes in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader on Wednesday at Warriors Stadium. It was the 20th win of the season for the Warriors.
Tech won game one, 10-6, before taking game two in dramatic fashion, 8-7. The Orange and Black improve to 20-17-1 overall and 12-6 in the WHAC while the Gray Wolves fall to 8-24 on the season and 5-16 in conference play.
GAME 1 | IT 10, LOURDES 6
In the first game, sophomore right-hander
Aaron Carroll made his first career start and cruised through six shutout innings, allowing just two hits while walking and striking out two. He handed the ball to the bullpen with a 4-0 lead in the seventh.
That's when the game got interesting as the Warriors bullpen struggled. Lourdes plated five runs in the inning on six hits to take a 5-4 lead, however, they missed a chance at more as
Bryan Brudi gunned down a runner at home and
Curtis Wise stopped the bleeding, stranding two runners to end the inning.
The momentum seemed to swing to the Gray Wolves, but the Warriors answered right back with a six run inning for the 10-5 lead.
Wes Darrow led off the inning with a fly ball to left that was dropped by the left fielder, allowing him to reach second.
Justin Kalusa followed with a perfect bunt down the third base line and he promptly stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Then with one swing of the bat, Brudi put the Warriors ahead for good with a three-run home run to left field for the 7-5 lead.
Dunnichay started another rally in the inning with a one-out double to left center and advanced to third when Lourdes' second baseman dropped a pop fly off the bat of Hakes.
Alex McKinstry followed with a two-run single to push the lead to four and Zac Pfafman added the sixth run with a double down the right field line, making it 10-5.
Two hits in the ninth plated another Gray Wolves run, but
Blake Converset induced a game-ending 6-3 double play to seal the win.
Wise improved to 5-0 on the season with one inning of work, allowing one run on four hits while Converset allowed one run on two hits over the final two frames to seal the victory.
Brudi led the offense, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs while Kalusa and McKinstry each recorded two hits.
GAME 2 | IT 8, LOURDES 7 (10)
It took three hours, but in the bottom of the 10th, Hakes finally ended the contest with a two-out single to left field, plating Dunnichay for the walk-off victory.
The two teams combined for 26 hits and 15 runs in the contest, while also committing five errors in the game.
It was a back-and-forth contest as Lourdes plated two runs on one hit in the top of the first and then
Derek Morgan singled in the bottom of the second to plate
Thomas Barnes and
Romer Portes to tie the score at two.
A failed pickoff attempt in the third plated the first of three runs on two Lourdes hits to give the visitors their second lead of the game, 5-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, Tech loaded the bases with nobody out, but plated just one run on a Brudi single, stranding the bases loaded, trailing by two. The Warriors took the lead again in the fifth as Morgan drove home Dunnichay and Pfafman delivered a two-run single to make it 6-5. Brudi then beat out a would-be double-play ball to plate an insurance run.
It was a short-lived lead as the Gray Wolves added two runs on three hits and a Warriors error to tie the score in the bottom of the frame.
The two teams then went four innings without scoring until Dunnichay doubled with two outs in the 10th and a passed ball moved him to third. Hakes then singled to left field for the game-winner, 8-7.
Connor McLaughlin improved to 2-0 as he pitched four scoreless innings of relief, allowing just two hits while striking out five.
Morgan paced the Warriors offense with a 3-for-5 game, scoring twice and driving in three while five other players recorded two hits.
The Warriors continue their homestand on Friday and Saturday, Apr. 18-19 when they host Madonna for a 4-game conference series. Game one on Friday is slated to begin at 3 p.m.
