Box Score 2 FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech baseball team saw its eight-game win streak come to an abrupt end on Wednesday as the Warriors dropped a pair of games to Aquinas, 7-5 and 10-6 at Warriors Stadium. The losses drop Tech to 29-20-1 overall and 18-10 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference play while the Saints improve to 21-19 overall and 12-12 in the WHAC.
GAME 1 | IT 5, AQ 7The Warriors were unable to hold a pair of leads in the opener and their ninth-inning rally fell short in a 7-5 loss. Tech scored first, plating a run in the first inning but the visitors answered back with a run in the second to tie the score.
The turning point in the contest came in the bottom of the third inning as the Warriors scored a pair of runs off a balk and a
Bryan Brudi RBI single and then loaded the bases with nobody out. A strikeout, a fielder's choice and a fly ball ended the frame and Tech had to settle for just two runs and a 3-1 lead.
Then in the top of the fourth, Aquinas loaded the bases and with two outs, Warriors starter
Clay Wallace induced what looked to be an inning-ending groundball up the middle, but an error allowed a run to score and a bases loaded walk tied the game.
Aquinas added three more tallies In the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 7-3 lead. The Warriors didn't threaten again until the ninth, but their rally fell short.
Derek Morgan singled to lead off the frame and
Caleb Heller was then hit by a pitch to put two-on with none out. Back-to-back groundouts netted a run and Brudi drove in another with a single. The tying run reached base via an error but a strikeout ended the contest.
The Orange and Black tallied 10 hits in the game, but lacked the big hit they needed. Brudi finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored while
Justin Kalusa and Morgan each tallied two hits.
Clay Wallace started the contest and took a no-decision while TJ Lutz took the loss and
Connor McLaughlin was solid in relief, allowing one unearned run on one hit over four innings.
GAME 2 | IT 6, AQ 10It was a rough start to game two for the Warriors as starter
Chase Keathley didn't have his best stuff and was forced to leave the game early after being injured on a pitch with two outs in the second inning.
In the first two innings, the Saints tallied five runs on six hits and a Tech error, while stranding four runners on the bases. It could've been worse but
Nick Romie escaped a bases loaded jam with a strikeout to end the second.
Three more Saints touched home in the fifth on one hit and another Tech error to extend the lead to eight, 8-0. A
Thomas Barnes RBI triple followed by a two-run blast from Brudi made it 8-3 with two innings to play.
Aquinas added their ninth tally in the sixth, but Tech plated three more in the bottom half on a
Zach Pfafman RBI walk and a Kalusa two-run single. The Warriors had a chance for more with two on and one out, but a strikeout and a popup ended the frame.
The Saints plated their final tally in the seventh and the Warriors stranded two more runners in the bottom half to end the game.
Tech tallied just five hits in the night-cap, being held to one-hit until the fourth. Kalusa was the lone Warrior with two hits, he also drove in two while Brudi was 1-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
Brenden Penny (5-1) got the win, allowing six runs over five innings while Keathley (4-4) took the loss allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits over 1.2 innings.
The Warriors and Saints will do it again tomorrow, with first pitch of the doubleheader set for 1 p.m. at Warriors Stadium. Live audio, video and stats will be available at
