Box Score 2 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Despite a 5-for-5 day from
Brian Hakes, the Indiana Tech baseball team dropped a pair of Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference contests to Davenport, 6-2, 6-1 at the Farmers Athletic Complex on Saturday.
The loss drops the Warriors to 13-14-1 on the season and 5-3 in conference play while the Panthers improve to 22-12 overall and 10-3 in the WHAC.
GAME 1 | TECH 2, DU 6
Clay Wallace (3-4) got the ball in game one for Tech and kept the Warriors in the game as he allowed just three runs on eight hits over seven innings, recording seven strikeouts against just two walks, but the offense didn't back him up in the loss.
The Orange and Black got on the board first in the top of the second as Hakes singled up the middle with one out and his courtesy runner,
Wes Darrow, came around to score two batters later on a
Derek Morgan single for the 1-0 lead. Tech had runners at the corners with just one out, but a pair of strikeouts ended the threat.
Davenport came right back in the bottom of the inning, getting a run on two hits, to tie the score. After Tech stranded runners in each of the next four innings, the Panthers broke through again as three hits, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly plated two runs for a 3-1 lead for DU.
In the eighth Tech finally scored again, as
Romer Portes and
Jacob Dunnichay led off with back-to-back singles and Hakes then loaded the bases on a bunt. An
Alex McKinstry sacrifice fly scored Portes and a hit-by-pitch then loaded the bases again with one out. A bad luck double-play then ended the inning for the Warriors.
The wheels came off in the bottom of the frame as the Panthers plated three runs, two unearned, on three hits and three Tech errors for the 6-2 lead.
Thomas Barnes led off the ninth with a single, but he was stranded at third to end the game.
Hakes finished the contest 2-for-2 and
Bryan Brudi also recorded two hits while Portes and Darrow scored the two runs and McKinstry and Morgan recorded the RBIs for Tech.
GAME 2 | TECH 1, DU 6
Errors plagued the Warriors again in the second game of the twin-bill, as starter
Chase Keathley (1-3) allowed just one earned run, six overall, on seven hits over 3 1/3 innings for the Warriors while
Marc Brandenburg allowed just one hit over 2 2/3 innings of relief for Tech.
The offense lacked the key hit in both games for the Warriors and it started in the first as
Justin Kalusa and Brudi reached on a pair of one-out singles, but an infield pop-up and a fielder's choice ended the threat.
Davenport took full advantage, as a dropped fly ball to the leadoff man came around to score following a sacrifice and a single for the 1-0 lead. Tech then stranded two more runners in the second before the Panthers scored three more runs on four hits and another error for the 4-0 lead.
Two more base runners were left on in the third and DU followed with another run on a hit to extend the lead to five. The Warriors got their lone run in the fourth as Hakes led off with a triple to right field and his courtesy runner,
Tyler Denniston, scored a batter later on a McKinstry sacrifice fly.
The Panthers tallied the final run in the bottom of the frame on two more hits for the 6-1 lead.
For the contest, Tech stranded eight men on base and scored just one run on eight hits while DU also tallied eight hits, plating six.
Hakes finished 3-for-3 in the game while Brudi also had a multi-hit game, finishing 2-for-4.
The Orange and Black will conclude their four-game series with the Panthers tomorrow, Apr. 6 with first pitch of the doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Farmers Athletic Complex.
