Rally Falls Short as @INTechBaseball Suffers 4-game Sweep to @DU_BSBALL

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Indiana Tech baseball team scored 12 runs on 18 hits in the final two games of their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference series with Davenport, but were again swept by the Panthers, losing game one 12-4 and game two, 9-8.

With the losses, the Warriors fall to 13-16-1 on the season and 5-5 in WHAC play while the Panthers move to 24-12 overall and 12-3 in conference play.

GAME 1 | TECH 4, DU 12 | BOX SCORE

Jared Harvey got the ball in the game three of the series and after a rough first inning seemed to settle in, before running into trouble in the fourth that led to the 12-4 loss.

Tech looked to be in business in the first as Justin Kalusa singled with one out and Bryan Brudi followed with a walk, but a fielder's choice and a grounded stranded the runners.

The Panthers didn't waste any time on offense, getting a run on one hit as a pair of passed balls plated the game's first run.

Both teams stranded a runner in the second and went down in order in the third before Tech took its first lead since the second inning of game one of the series on Saturday.

Romer Portes got things going with a leadoff walk and promptly stole second, allowing him to advance to third on a Jacob Dunnichay groundout. Brian Hakes followed with a single to center to tie the game. Geronimo Berroa, Jr. singled and an Alex McKinstry double plated Thomas Barnes, who courtesy ran for Hakes, to take a 2-1 lead.

Derek Morgan drew a walk, forcing a pitching change. Alex Schuiling's first offering hit Wes Darrow to score Berroa, Jr. for the 3-1 lead. A pop out and groundout then ended the inning as the Warriors left the bases loaded.

Davenport used a five-hit barrage in the bottom of the fourth to plate four runs, taking a 5-3 lead which proved to be enough, but they weren't done. The home team tallied single runs in the fifth and sixth followed by three in the seventh and two in the eighth to make it 12-4.

The Orange and Black's fourth run came in the eighth when McKinstry again plated another run with a two-out single to left, scoring Dunnichay who reached on a one-out single earlier in the inning.

Harvey (1-2) took the loss for the Warriors, allowing six runs, five earned, on eight hits over four innings. TJ Lutz, Jacob Koehring, Aaron Carroll, Nick Romie and Blake Converset all pitched in relief for Tech.

Jonathan Cheshire (3-0) got the win for the Panthers pitching 5 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits.

Tech finished with eight hits, with two each coming from McKinstry and Berroa, Jr. McKinstry drove in two and Berroa, Jr. scored once.

GAME 2 | TECH 8, DU 9 | BOX SCORE

The final game of the series, as is custom in the WHAC, was a seven inning affair and the Panthers are happy that was the case as the Warriors rallied in the seventh, scoring three runs, but the DU defense stepped up with a pick-off to end the contest.

The Panthers scored in every inning but the sixth, scoring single runs in the first, fourth and fifth while also scoring three runs in each of the second and third innings, plating nine runs on eight hits will committing a single error.

Trailing 4-0 heading into the third, the Warriors cut the deficit to one with three runs on three hits in the frame. Kalusa singled with one-out and then stole second and third to spark the rally. He scored on Brudi's single to left and Portes followed with a single. Dunnichay was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. A Morgan walk plated the Warriors second run and a McKinstry sacrifice fly made it 4-3.

Tech rallied again in the fifth as Brudi and Dunnichay each singled with Brudi scoring on an RBI double from Morgan. Tyler Denniston drew a two-out walk to load the bases and a Hakes hit-by-pitch made the score 8-5. A missed balk call caused the game to be played under protest the rest of the way and a groundout ended the rally.

After DU pushed the lead back to four, 9-5, the Warriors began another rally, only to have a base running mistake end the contest.

A McKinstry walk, an error and a single by Hakes loaded the bases with one out. A Barnes groundout scored McKinstry and Darrow followed with a two-out single to cut the deficit to two, 9-7. Hakes scored the eighth run for Tech as Darrow was picked off first attempting to steal, ending the contest.

Reece Phillips (1-2) took the loss for the Warriors, allowing five runs on three hits in two innings while Connor McClaughlin, Brian Gremaux and Curtis Wise all pitched at least 2/3 of an inning in relief.

Brudi led the offense with three hits, finishing 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Kalusa added two hits for Tech and Morgan finished with a pair of RBIs.

Tech begins its 23-game, season-ending homestand when they host Northwestern Ohio for a WHAC doubleheader on Wednesday, Apr. 9 with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m.
