Guthrie scores 5 goals to lead Tech
Box Score FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Despite the intense rain throughout the game, the sixth-ranked Indiana Tech women's lacrosse team defeated second-ranked Davenport, 14-10 at the Warriors Athletic Field to finish the regular season in a three-way tie atop the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference standings.

The Warriors finished the season 8-4 overall and 8-2 in WHAC play while the Panthers conclude the 2014 season with a 13-2 record and 8-2 in the conference.

Things started off quickly for tech as Toreelyn Murphy won the opening draw control and one minute into the contest, Lauren Allard scored on a free position shot for her 17th goal of the season. After just two minutes, Autumn McMillin found Kendall Guthrie in front of the goal for the 2-0 lead. After Tech won another draw control, Guthrie slipped on the wet field, losing the ball and Davenport quickly cleared and Hanna Bush scored to cut the lead to one, 2-1.

With 23:41 left in the first, McMillin turned a Panthers turnover into her 43rd game of the season. The teams struggled to gain an edge in the poor weather but after Murphy forced a turnover, Tech cleared the ball and Allard found Guthrie for the senior's 54th goal in 2014 and a 4-1 lead. Kaitlyn Lowden scored a man-up goal for the Panthers to cut the lead in half, but Guthrie made a stellar pass to McMillin inside the eight-meter, but a minute later, another man-up goal for DU, this one from Emily DeVries made it 5-3.

Lowden netted her second goal of the contest to cut the deficit to one and two minutes later Lowden assisted on Jessica Lemcke's first goal of the contest to tie the game at five. Allard scored another goal with an assist by Guthrie and Tayler Campbell added her 23rd goal of the season for a 7-5 halftime lead.

Tech outshot the Panthers 9-8 in the half and held an 8-5 margin in draw controls while failing to clear just once in 14 attempts. Davenport won ground balls, 12-8 and forced seven turnovers while committing just six.

Allard won the opening draw control in the second half, and after a turnover and a failed free position shot by the Panthers, Alexis DiGiovanni found McMillin for the Warriors eighth goal of the contest. DU won the ensuing draw control and a Tech foul led to a Lemcke free position shot, which she converted into a Panthers goal, making it 8-6. Allard then won another draw control, and after another minute of play, she converted a free position shot for a 9-6 lead and another DU foul allowed Guthrie to score on a free position shot of her own to extend the lead to four.

The rain really started to come down over the final 20 minutes of play making it hard to maintain possession and it took seven minutes for the next goal, coming on a free position shot from Bridget Zuidgeest and just one minute later she converted another free position shot to cut the lead to two, 10-8.

The Warriors followed with four unanswered goals to put the game out of reach. Murphy found DiGiovanni at the 10:35 mark to push the lead to three and Guthrie scored the next two goals for the Warriors, her 56th and 57th of the season to make it 13-8 before Murphy converted a free position shot, her first of the season to make it 14 for the home team. Taylor Balch, the Panthers leading scorer, scored her lone goal of the contest with 3:39 to play and Lowden added another tally with 1:38 left to make the score 14-10.

Both teams recorded 20 shots and 23 ground balls while Tech won draw controls, 14-11. The Warriors finished 25-for-28 in clears and 4-for-6 on free-position shots while the Panthers finished 21-for-24 on clear attempts and 3-for-8 on free-position attempts.

Guthrie paced the home team with five goals and seven assists while Allard and McMillin added three goals and an assist each. Meaghan Eldridge got the win in net, tallying six saves, five in the second half, while allowing 10 goals in 60 minutes of play.

The Warriors return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 9 when they host Lourdes in the first round of the WHAC Tournament. Game time is to be determined. The winner will advance to face Davenport on Friday at Aquinas.
