Box Score | FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Senior left-hander,
Justin Kalusa, got the ball in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Championship game for the Indiana Tech baseball team and took a no-hitter into the seventh, but took a no-decision as the Warriors (34-23-1) fell to Davenport University, 3-2 at Warriors Stadium on Wednesday.
Kalusa, an Elgin, Ill. native, came into the contest as the team leader in ERA and pitched his best game as a Warrior. The first base runner for the Panthers didn't come until the third, but
Brian Hakes erased him with a caught stealing. Kalusa's first real test came in the sixth when he walked the bases loaded, but he induced a line drive to short to end the threat.
It was a big out as the offense had given him a run in the top of the inning.
Thomas Barnes led off with a base hit. He advanced to second on a balk, third on a Kalusa single off the wall in right and then scored on a sacrifice fly from
Bryan Brudi.
His first hit came in the seventh, a leadoff double off the wall. A bunt single put two on and in came
Curtis Wise, a Fort Wayne native. A sacrifice fly plated the tying run for the Panthers headed to the eighth.
In the eighth the home team scored an unearned run on a groundball through the legs of
Romer Portes for a 2-1 lead. The junior third baseman was due to lead off the ninth for the Warriors and he deposited a 1-0 fastball over the right-centerfield wall to tie the score.
The momentum was on the Warriors side, but after a quick ground out, the Panthers got a one-out single and won the game on a walk-off double to advance to the NAIA Opening Round.
Kalusa took a no decision as he went six innings, allowing one run on two hits. Wise suffered his first loss of the season as he allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits over 2.1 innings.
Brudi ends his career with a 24-game reached-base streak, going 1-for-3 in the game including an RBI. Kalusa and Portes each finished the game 2-for-4 while Barnes was 1-for-2 with a run scored.
