MT. PLEASANT, Mich. – In a contest that saw 15 penalties totaling 40 minutes, the Indiana Tech ACHA Division I hockey team couldn't capitalize on its opportunities, falling to Central Michigan 3-1 at Isabella County Events Arena on Saturday.
The goaltenders for both teams stole the show in the first period as
John Slavik stopped 13 shots in the period while the Warriors attempted 11, none finding the net. Slavik stood tall until the 5:52 mark of the second stanza when the Chippewas capitalized on the power play to take the 1-0 lead.
The score remained that way until the 10 minute mark of the second period when another Tech penalty led to a CMU power play goal and a two goal advantage. The Warriors were able to use a CMU penalty to cut the deficit to one as Nate Nelson netted the Warriors only tally with an assist from
Ryan Krolikowski. A late, empty-net tally by the home team accounted for the final margin.
The Orange and Black put 23 shots on target in the contest, but only found the net once while the home team put 46 shots on target with Slavik making 43 saves in the contest.
"We played with great energy and intensity tonight, but we just couldn't capitalize on our opportunities," said Warriors Head Coach
Frank DiCristofaro.
Tech returns to action on Friday, Feb. 13 in Kalamazoo, Mich. for the series finale with Western Michigan. Faceoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Lawson Arena.
