KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Indiana Tech American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Division 1 men's ice hockey team dropped its Great Lakes Collegiate Hockey League (GLCHL) opener to Western Michigan in the inaugural "Battle of I-69", 4-2, on Tuesday evening at Lawson Arena.
The Warriors found themselves trailing early, as the Stallions scored the first goal of the game just a minute and a half into the opening period. The hosts would score two more goals just six seconds apart, at 9:56 and 9:50, to send the Orange and Black into the locker down 3-0 after the opening 20 minutes.
Jace Childs brought Tech to within two at the 5:52 mark in the second period with his team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Adam Jonak and
Jarrett Pfeiffer notched the assists.
Western Michigan would strike again just one minute and 36 seconds into the final frame with a power play goal to increase their lead to 4-1. Jonak would score his first goal of the season to bring Tech within two, but it wasn't enough as the Stallions held on for the victory.
The Warriors had eight penalties on the night, while the hosts had five.
John Slavik took the loss for Tech, and
Ryan Attwood and
Joe Molfetta each recorded their second assists of the season on Jonak's goal.
Tech returns home for a two-game series on Oct. 9-10 with Eastern Michigan at the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse. Puck drop is set for 8:30 p.m. on Friday and 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, respectively, and links to live video will be available at IndianaTechWarriors.com.
