FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Indiana Tech ACHA Division 3 hockey team returned to action following a month-long break on Friday night, falling to crosstown rival IPFW, 6-5, in overtime at the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse.
The Mastodons struck first off a goal from Brendan Lewis just under three minutes into the game, but the Warriors would counter with goals from
Austin Griffis and
Eric Stewart in the final five minutes of the period to head into the locker room up 2-1 after 20 minutes.
Connor Barney would notch his first goal of the season just 16 seconds into the second period while
Jerret Haas scored 3:04 into the period to put Tech up 4-1. Lewis would tally his second goal of the night for IPFW with 10:01 remaining in the second as the Orange and Black headed into the final period of regulation up 4-2.
Nick Janiszewski scored what looked like an insurance goal to an impressive offensive night for the hosts, but the Mastodons would come charging back with three goals in the final 14 minutes, including two more from Lewis, to send the game into overtime.
A tripping penalty on Janiszewski with just over two minutes gone into the overtime would set IPFW up with a 4-on-3, and Curtis Artuso would score the game winner just over 30 seconds into the power play.
Chris Boyd made 21 saves in net for the Warriors, while
Hudson Sabin,
Tyler Grunden, Haas and Stewart would tally assists.
Tech (8-7-1-0) returns to the ice next weekend with a two-game set against Michigan. Puck drop is set for Friday night at 8:30 p.m. from the SportONE/Parkview Icehouse. Live video will be available at IndianaTechWarriors.com.
