Men’s Hockey Fall to Top Seed in Quarterfinals at ACHA National Championships

MARLBOROUGH, Ma. – On Sunday night, the Indiana Tech men's hockey team saw their season come to an end as the Warriors would fall 4-3 in overtime to the No. 1 seeded Minot State University Beavers.

The Warriors were the No. 8 seed in the tournament, winning in their first game against No. 9 seed Maryville University (Mo.) before falling in the quarterfinals to No. 1 seed Minot State University (N.D.). The Beavers entered the national tournament with a record of 31-3 and ranked as the No. 1 team in the country. Minot State dismantled the Warriors WHAC foe, UM-Dearborn 8-0 on Friday night. The Beavers also had an extra day of rest as the Warriors played Saturday night before the Sunday matchup between the two sides. The game itself was a thrilling. Minot State scored two goals just 19 seconds apart midway through the first to take a 2-0 lead before Tech's Pavel Svoboda would answer a little over two minutes later on a pass from Luke Anderson to bring the Warriors within one at the first intermission. In the second, Tech's Avery Smith picked up the only goal of the period to tie the game at two, while Colton Nikiforuk picked up the assist. The teams headed into the final period knotted at two with a spot in the semifinals on the line. Just over four minutes into the period, Minot State broke the deadlock and was poised to move on to the next round, before Indiana Tech's Axel Low saved the Warriors season with just 3:11 to go in the game and force overtime. In the sudden death extra period, both sides had chances to win it until finally Troy Hamilton scored the winner to send Minot State to the semifinals.

The Warriors played one of their best games of the season and gave it all they had, falling just one shot short. Ty Barnhill was instrumental in the game for the Warriors as he made 45 saves in the game. The Warriors were outshot in the game 49-22 but capitalized on their scoring chances as they almost pulled off the upset. Aiden Dufort and Matej Krasny also played well in the game picking up assists on Low's tying goal.

The Warriors finish the season at 32-5 and an impressive 15-2 in conference play as the won the WHAC regular season title for the third straight season. They achieved six more wins this season than last year and made it one round further this year, to the quarterfinals, in the national tournament.

The No. 1 seeded Beavers now advance to the semifinals and will play No. 5 seed Liberty University (Va.). The other semifinal matchup features No. 2 seed Ohio University against No. 3 Adrian College (Mich.), with the championship game set for Tuesday, March 21 at 8 pm where the ACHA Men's Hockey National Champion will be crowned.
