GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Indiana Tech Men's and Women's Cross Country teams travelled north to Michigan for the highly coveted NAIA Great Lakes Challenge on Saturday morning.
Bronwyn Nel was the story of the day, joining elite women's cross country company, becoming the fourth woman to run a sub 18 minute 5k.
The women's 5k race would showcase a tremendous amount of talent with 16 nationally ranked or receiving votes teams. For the Warriors,
Bronwyn Nel would lead the group, running a blazing 17:56 to finish in seventh place overall. She becomes just the fourth athlete to go sub 18:00 in the 5k in Tech women's cross country history and is the first ever freshman to accomplish that feat. Her time of 17:56 was also the third fastest recorded by a Tech athlete on the Riverside Park course behind former Tech greats, Alissa McKaig and Lisa Voyles.
Karla Julian would run a PR, breaking the 20:00 barrier for the first time with a 19:40.
Makella Sweeney (20:56),
Sarah Koker (21:02), and
Madison Remington (22:13) rounded out Tech's top five in the race. Overall, the Warriors finished 22
nd as a team with a score of 546.
For the men's 8k race,
Ayub Sayid led the Warriors with a time of 25:09. He was closely followed by his teammates as three other Warriors went under 26:00, including
Juan Caballero (25:30),
Giulio Romano (25:34), and
Kobee Beck (25:53).
Andreas Tonning rounded out the top five for Tech with a time of 26:12. The Warriors overall team time of 2:08:19 is the second fastest in school history! Overall, the Warriors finished 16
th as a team with a score of 403.
Up next, the Warriors will get set for postseason action with the WHAC Championships on Friday, November 7
th at Heritage Park in Adrian, Michigan.
